Broken/Bruised/Fractured?

I was playing hockey tonight and lost an edge in a tight turn...another player skated into me as I fell and his knees hit my in the ribs and the head. Helmet kept my head safe, but his other knee got me under the arm where there isn't any padding.

I thought he just winded me, and actually played another game following that for another team that was short of players. But as the second game progressed my side began tightening up and, now that I'm home, I'm having sharp pains when I try to breathe.

So ya, I guess I'll have it look at tomorrow morning. I need to shower and sleep now.

Anyway..this isn't my worst experience with pain, so I'm not ressurecting that thread.
Anyone have tips for rib injuries?

Doctor Pachead says go see a real Doctor tommorow if it still hurts. Anyhow, don't they have like free socialized medicine care where you live ?

Happened to me while I was playing hockey a few years ago. I fell onto my ribs/back because some jerk pulled me down by my jersey.

Anywho, I played for the remainder of the game, but it hurt like all hell. People told me it was probably just a bruised rib, because it if had been broken, I wouldn't have been able to continue playing.

But it just kept on hurting for the next 2 days, so I decided to see a doctor. Turned out that it was a broken rib, and not only that, it was broken in a place (lower section) where it could've actually ruptured my spleen, and that there was a possibility I could've bled to death internally.

Luckily nothing like that happened.

Moral of the story, - go and see a doctor.

Give a good hard cough. If you fall down in agony, it's broke. Put a little butter on it, you'll be fine

i have a scar that runs from my right nipple around in a diagonal line across to my back.

i was inline skating a few years ago. griding the edge of a wooden box (that had a metal edge). my front wheel touched the wood and i flew off and my side collided with another metal edged box.
my brother and i were living in london at the time, and since were young (and didn't have all that much money, and preferd to spend it on other stuff), i didn't go to the doctor.
no idea if my rib(s) were broken or bruised.

breathing hurt like hell, laughing almost brought me to tears.

so yeah, what i'm trying to say is, go to a doctor and not to a comedy show.

Not much to do for it and it sounds cracked or broken.

You'll feel better in a week. Take it easy for three.

And remember how Adam (from Adam & Eve) must've felt.

I had a couple of bruised ribs after a car accident...hurt so bad I thought they were broken (luckily, they weren't).

Get an X-ray.

I'v never had a broken rib. As a nurse I have taken care of patients with fractured ribs. It can be serious, but yours sounds no to be. I pray that you are still alright this morning.

You definitely need to see your doctor, brapper. Normally the treatment is to just tape the ribs for immobilization and support. Good luck, will look forward to an update.

I've never broken a rib, in fact I had never broken anything until I broke my finger this season playing softball. I was under the mistaken impression that if it doesn't hurt to bend it it must not be broken and continued playing on it for the last four innings. By the time I got to work that night my finger was dark purple and half the people I worked with thought it was nothing and half thought it was broken. So I went to the hospital the next morning and sure enough it was.

Doesn't really relate to ribs, but goes along with Warung's story that just because you can keep playing on it doesn't mean there's nothing wrong. If you've got insurance there's no reason not to get it checked. Hope you get better soon.

ya, so I've woken up (not that I slept well anyway) and it still hurts. So I'm off to the clinic to see what they say. I'm not overly worried about it, just playing it safe.
Hopefully I'm in good enough shape for the Collective Soul concert tonight. Should be fantastic to see them play after all these years.
And ya, Pachead, I get alllll the medical care I could ever want for free.

If it weren't free, I'd tell you to skip it. They're going to tell you to be careful and that it will hurt for a while. There isn't really any treatment unless you snapped one in half, which you'd know you did.
