The link works fine for me.

Believe it or not, this is old technology -- it's been done at places like MIT's Media Lab for some time. Experimentation with hands-on direct manipulation like this has been going on for years. Definitely cool stuff.

Google Video only displays a blank page on every Mac browser I have tried. It's not Mac compatible. Since this is a Mac site please post Mac compatible links.

Agreed, it is Mac compatible: I watched it on my Mac.

It's a Flash video -- try downloading the latest Flash plugin from Macromedia.

I have the latest Flash installed (8.0 r22). The problem is not on my end. Heise.de reported that it is Windows only.

Well Heise.de is the authority, after all. Google Videos work on all Macs I've tried, so I think that the problem probably is on your end.

Works fine here.

And though, as tooki pointed out, there have been experiments with this sort of thing for a long time, this definitely looks like something beyond the "does this work" stage. Very, VERY cool!

It's not me. No content is transmitted. You can clearly see it in the source code. There is nothing there after the "Video" headline div. That's on all browsers I tried and on two different Macs.

No, Glenn, I've seen demos just like this from a few years ago. This is not terribly innovative.

The stuff I've seen has all been much clunkier and slower-maybe I've only seen MUCH older experiments.

Umm, others are having no trouble. It is you. How or why I don't know, but it is.

Google uses really funky HTML sometimes, so the code may not be transparent. On mine, the source is a tight jumble I can't really make out, since it's not separated onto indented lines or anything.

Well that's not "innovation" -- using faster hardware to make the system more responsive is pure evolution, not innovation.

Innovation was inventing this model of interaction, and MS didn't do that.

Yeah I saw a an exhibition MIT put on in Tokyo in 2000 that included something like this. Funny that this should pop up now.

The applications were a bit more diverse than what what shown. For example there was an architectural planning demo. The famous video ping pong game was also present.

It worked for me on my Mac, quality was poor though. An interesting concept.

That Heise article is old -- google video switched to a Flash-based player that is no longer Windows-only.

Also, did you try installing the Shockwave plugin as well? I don't think it needs it, but I do have it installed, so perhaps it's helping somehow.

But please calm down and stop being insulting and impatient to everyone. Clearly, everyone but you and one or two others had no trouble, indicating that it's far more likely that the problem is not with Google. When you make an incorrect statement (like that Google video is not Mac compatible) and others correctly tell you that you are wrong, you do not get the right to be nasty to them.

It's not even getting to the Flash (or possibly Shockwave) part. This is the complete source code of the web page:

Code:
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd"><html> <head> <meta content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" http-equiv="Content-type"> <title>Microsoft Gaming Inovation Video #1 - Google Video</title> <link href="common/google_style.css" rel="stylesheet"> <script src="jslib/misc.js" type="text/javascript"></script> <script src="jslib/misc.vbs" type="text/vbscript"></script> </head> <body onload="" id="GooglePage" class="GooglePage"> <div class="gaiaheader"> </div> <div class="videopagehead"> <a href="/"> <img src="common/logo_video.jpg" alt="Go to Google Video Home" id="googlelogo"> </a> <div id="topformholder"> <form action="videosearch" method="GET"> <table> <tr> <td> <input maxlength="256" type="text" name="q" value="microsoft" size="30"> </td> <td> <input type="submit" value="Search"> </td> <td align="left"> <a href="/videolineup">Video Preferences</a> </td> </tr> </table> </form> </div> </div> <div style="clear:both"></div> <!-- --> <div class="headline"> <span class="statusname">Video</span> </div>
Clearly (even though the code is not structured you can see it) the page stops after the "Video" header. There is no content. There is not even a closing of the body and html tags. This is how it is served from Google. It's with all browsers and it's not only with me since others get this as well.
When you make an incorrect statement (like that Google video is not Mac compatible) and others correctly tell you that you are wrong, you do not get the right to be nasty to them.
I looked it up at heise.de (which is Europe's most respected publisher for computer literature) when I had problems and when they said it is not Mac compatible I assumed that is the reason. I didn't know they Google changed the service since then.
Whatever the reason is that it is not working for some, it is definitely a problem with Google though. I even downloaded the page with curl -O and it is served incomplete.

And, tooki, I have been said to "suck" just because I experience this problem. And you call me insulting?

1. That source code only shares a few lines in common with what I am getting. The part in bold (the head) is the part our pages have in common. The rest (the body) is entirely different. Google uses IP detection to geographically-alter their content (e.g. automatically redirecting google.com to google.de from a German IP address). Perhaps something is messing up. Try clearing your google cookies.

In any case, my hunch with this problem is that it's not a Mac vs. PC issue. I'd be willing to bet that if you put a Windows PC onto your same internet connection, you'd have the same problem.

What happens if you use an anonymizing proxy (e.g. www.anonymizer.com) to view the link?

2. How about a google search? Looking at one source is hardly wise or definitive.

3. Well, clearly it's not a problem for everyone. I and almost everyone who posted in this thread have had no trouble.

4. You started it: you got hostile in your second post. Nobody had been rude to you by then, but you were rude to us. No wonder people retorted back (and awaspass's post was clearly in jest).
