Progresso Chicken Noodle or Chicken w/Wild Rice. Campbell's is watered down junk compared to Progresso.

That leaves a lot of foods out. What pisses me off the most is that the few foods that don't have MSG taste just as good.

Thank goodness for Trader Joe's.

Shouldn't you be GLAD for that ?

Just imagine that healthy food would always taste worse (like it often does, btw...)

I like Progresso soups too, but am I the only one who finds the chicken practically inedible? Like chewing on a piece of tree.

Anyhoo, lentil.

What I mean is, if the non MSG alternatives taste just as good or better, then why do the big food companies put that crap in practically everything?

If healthy food tastes worse, then you're not eating the right healthy food. I eat a lot of healthy foods that taste better (to me) than potato chips or a big mac.

For me it's a toss up between Campbell's Select Italian Wedding Soup and Campbell's Chicken Gumbo (which is hard to find).

I can't stand Progresso, it's always bland to me.

I don't understand the ruckus around MSG. It's a totally natural compound found in seaweed, which has been eaten for centuries. (It's also a reason why seaweed is used to make Japanese stocks.)

Agree, there is nothing unnatural about it.

I think there ARE people who are allergic or whatever, but MSG par se is not as bad as many say.

I think only dogs and cats should eat from cans. Homemade minestra is the best. Chicken soup when I have a cold is a very good cure. I also like creamed lobster bisque.

Tastes better actually. They use MSG so they wont have to use as many REAL spices or such. MSG inhances whatever spices are there. Stuff without MSG has the real deal in it.

So it does taste better.

Chinese food places used to do this for that very reason. To save money.

It's cheaper to use MSG than reason seasonings.

There are alot of people allergic to it, and don't know what is causing said reaction. All they know is spicey food puts them in pain.

Little do they know they can eat spicey food. Just not MSG.

Lots of food companies don't want people knowing that either.

Again, it's just not the evil chemical the anti-MSG people make it out to be. It's a natural compound, and some people happen to be allergic to it -- just as people are allergic to other natural foods like peanuts.

Do I think MSG gets overused? Yeah, probably.

BTW, it doesn't affect spices specifically. It's a flavor enhancer, which works basically by enhancing the functioning of the taste buds, effectively increasing their sensitivity. But this increased sensitivity applies to the whole food, not just certain ingredients.

The Campbell's low sodium and Healthy Choice soups are MSG-free but you have to add lots and lots of salt to the low sodium soup to make it taste like the "normal" soup... if that tastes better to you.

There are more people allergic to MSG than say, peanuts. MSG effects more people than most allergies do. I would say there is probably more people that have bad reactions to MSG than there are people that are lactose intolerant. Remember also, not everyone that has effects from it know what is causing it.

The purpose of adding MSG, is so companies can use LESS REAL flavor inducing mixes. LESS of the real thing. It Costs LESS to use MSG than using say more hot peppers.

Exactly, I hear a lot of people who think they got food poisoning at Chinese restaurants, it's probably just MSG poisoning.

I always feel sick after eating something with MSG in it.

I doubt that you know HOW much MSG you are taking in.
I guess your reaction is psychosomatic.

Me and a ex did a test once.

She made a meal without using MSG.

Then made the SAME meal the next week with MSG.

Didn't tell me either times. OR what she was doing.

The second meal really tore up my gut something aweful. I was on the pot that night, and most of the next day because of it.

She thought it was all in my head too.

You can buy that stuff by the jar. Evil, Evil stuff.

I have no doubt that certain amounts will trigger an allergic reaction, especially if you use this as an extra add-on instead of spices.

However, I think that the occurance of MSG in many natural foods will not cause that sort of reaction. Unless, somebody told you that in your food was MSG, and suddenly, you start having reactions. That's what I'm talking about.

I cannot eat foods that contain MSG. I began having reactions to certain foods rather suddenly so I began keeping track of which foods caused problems and which did not. Without fail, foods that list MSG as an ingredient are inedible to me; fortunately I am not so sensitive that foods which contain natural glutamate cause me problems.
Do not be fooled into thinking that MSG is the same thing as naturally forming glutamate.

So what's the difference, besides the amount being used / contained?

Fooled? The stuff in the bags is made from seaweed. It's the same thing. If it's chemically identical, it's the same thing.

Perhaps it's the artificial coloring that's common in many cheap chinese sauces that cause the problems.
