To Apple Consumers:
Apple released many new and innovative products today, including a piece of software called "Front Row." Unfortunately this software is only available on the newly released iMacs. As a loyal Apple consumer I feel that Apple should release this software/feature as a standalone product.

Apple listens to their customers, so I urge those who feel the same way to cast their vote. Please follow the link below to read and sign the petition.

Apple 'Front Row' Petition

You can buy the remote from Apple.

No, it has an IrDA transceiver, which is a very specific thing and is not compatible.

I'm sure Apple has thought of this. They're using Front Row and the Remote to try to drive iMac sales for the holiday season. If everyone could just buy Front Row seperately, there would be no incentive to upgrade.

I would imagine that not too long after the holidays, we'll see a bundled Front Row/USB-IR Remote package for around $70-80. Everyone will buy it, Apple will make money, analysts will say Apple is doooooooooooooomed.

It has an infrared eye. But does this only work with the iPod. Or does the dock connected to an Mac work a an infrared-receiver??

If you buy a new computer just to get Front Row, yes, I would say that you have more money than brains. But, it's not dumb if you're on the fence about an upgrade or looking to get something for the holidays. Front Row is simply a value-add that can help to drive iMac sales going into the peak buying months.

Jobs is trying to sell iMacs, so by keeping Front Row exclusive to them for a few months and then releasing as a stand-alone at a later date, he gets the best of both. If anyone can buy Front Row right now, it's no longer a value-add for the iMac. Be patient, you'll get your Front Row... but new iMac-buyers get it first.

Gosh, do we have to spell this out for everyone?!?
Apple Remote with iPod
If you connect your iPod to a home stereo, powered speakers or TV set, the Apple Remote lets you experience your songs, slideshows and more from across the room. Just plug your iPod into the Universal Dock and choose a playlist, slideshow or video. Then, sit back, relax and enjoy. Ready to move on to the next song? No need to get up from your sofa--just press the forward button on the Apple Remote. Phone ringing? Just click pause, then pick up where you left off.

The Apple Remote offers play/pause, volume control and forward/back buttons.

The Apple Remote requires the iPod Universal Dock and any iPod with a Dock connector.

Apple Remote with Mac
Included with the new iMac G5, the Apple Remote gives you total command of your music, photos, videos and DVDs from anywhere in the room. It combines with Front Row -- a menu-driven, full-screen interface -- to make accessing your iMac's digital bounty from any seat in the room as simple as navigating your iPod. When you click the Apple Remote's Menu button, your desktop fades and Front Row's sleek interface takes its place to give you control over your music in iTunes, your photos in iPhoto, the videos in your Movies folder and whatever DVDs you want to play. Turn up the volume. Shuffle. Skip to the next chapter on your DVD. Play a slideshow, a home movie you made in iMovie, even a movie trailer. Just sit back and enjoy the show.

What's in the Box:
Apple Remote
Battery (CR 2032)
User Guide

Compatible with Apple products introduced in 2005 or later that have a built-in Infrared (IR) receiver.
What does this mean?

If you want to use this remote to control your iPod, you need the new dock with the IR receiver, plus an iPod with a dock connector.

If you want to use it with a Mac, you need a 2005 Mac that came with a built in IR receiver. Right now, that means only the newest iMac.

No, you can't use the iPod dock as an IR receiver for a Mac.

Speaking of mahsters, instead of a remote, you could also train your hamster to run to the computer and press the buttons. Hamster remote...

I agree. It just a matter of time before everyone can enjoy Front Row. Remember when iMovie was first released? You could only get by purchasing a new iMac DV. Remember when iTunes was first released? You could only burn CDs on macs with built in CD burners. iDVD 1.0 could only be attained by purchasing a new mac with super drive. The first iSub only worked on iMacs, ect. ect. ect.

If Front Row is AppleScriptable or even keyboard-navigable it'll work with any remote. How hard is this to get people?

I'd like to have front row just for playing movies. Don't care much about the movies features. Though really it'd be nice if they added support for things like Keynote slide shows and what not. Include it in some sort of pref option or something.

Front row will be your movie store when the iTMS gets full length features.

It already has a front end for movie trailers.

I see movies being displaced from iTunes when it hits version 7, which according to my information should be in about an hour.

Front Row 2, buy movies and tv shows, from your sofa.

IDGI. Who would want to watch movies on a 17" or 20" screen from a distance? Front Row would only be useful when connected to a TV (with a Mac mini, iPod or perhaps AirPort base-station). As it is now, it's just a gimmick.

i have a feeling tthat a new frontrow will come out pretty soon...
the fact that the imac version works off infrared, i think they may be working on a bluetooth version so people do not have to purchase a separate dongle...give it a few weeks and i am sure something will show up

Hey while we're at it, why not petition Apple to release a firmware update for the color iPods to play video? This is too funny, looking at all the sigs on the petition so far. If you want it so bad, just buy the iMac.

This is absolutely ridiculous. If you want FrontRow that bad, you have 3 options:
1. Buy a new iMac
2. Wait for Apple to (maybe) release it for other systems
3. Stop being a whiny bitch and get over it

What happens if you have the universal dock set up next to the new iMac and you try to use the remote? will it activate both of them at the same time?

I am genuinely surprised that Apple didn't go bluetooth for this remote. Either that thing has crazy range or they're just cheap .

A Bluetooth version would be a lot more awesome. As well, I would love to be able to even just control front row from my keyboard. It'd certainly replace dashboard for F12.

The remote IS available, but with no receiver on the Mac, it can't control the Mac. Right now it's being sold as an iPod accessory (to go with the new iPod dock that has an IR receiver), and as a replacement for the iMac remote.

I bought a 50" DLP HD TV - hooked to a home theatre system - way cooler than watching on a computer screen. Get a TV.

If Apple opened up Front Row on a Mac mini and made a receiver for one. You could use the Mac mini with that 50 inch DLP DUH.
