Rest in peace, Jason Collier.

What is it with sports stars and athletes who die suddenly?

It's kind of disturbing. They are supposed to be in the best shape of their lives and then they die.

Sadly, it isn't just sports stars. It no doubt happens daily, but you just hear about it because some people are more famous than others.
Why is there always money for war, but none for education?

Odd that a post is made about a white player who died but none came a few weeks ago when the San Francisco 49 lineman (who was black) died immediately following a preseason game (and he died in front of his teammates).

Editing due to Randman's clarification.

This has nothing to do with race. At all. It's sad when ANYONE dies.

Perhaps I am the only one who is not completely surprised that these guys are passing away due to heart problems. Look at how massively huge, especially the 49er's lineman, these guys are. Think how hard the heart has to work to supply that body. Guys that big are not genetically made to move around that quickly and for extreme amounts of time. The NFL, and sports in general, really needs to keep a closer eye on their players. They encourage them to beef up to levels and perform activities that push the human body to extremes, and more and more we are seeing this as a result.

Another example is Marc-Vivien Foe.

I'm not reducing anything to anything, just pointing out an observation. It's sad when any young person dies. Just thought if this was truly about the headline (sports starts who die suddenly), then others should have been mentioned as well.

Since you mention that, where's YOUR post about the fact that a black man died?

It doesn't even need to be said that this has nothing to do with race.

I just happened to be drinking my coffee when I read it and thought it was sad. It didn't matter to me what color he is or was: It's sad that a HUMAN BEING, who should be in one of the best physical conditions, died suddenly.

Just go post somewhere else. You're a jerk, Randman.
Hi Cody,

Yes, it is very sad. Thank you for bringing it to our attention. Even though they are athletes then can have an underling heart condition that they had from birth. Often undetectable.

I'm always around if you want to talak. Don't want you to be sad.

It is a bad situation indeed. A couple of weeks ago the Chicago Bulls had to release Eddy Curry because he refused to take a genetic test for a heart condition. A lot of folks criticized Bulls GM John Paxson for presenting Curry with that ultimatum, but I realized that Paxson didn't want to be responsible for putting a player on the court with a potentially life threatening condition, and I guess I agree (plus, they offered $400,000/year for the next 50 years if he failed the test). Curry was having a break-out year last season, until he was sidelined for the last few months of the season with heart trouble. So, I think they wouldn't have made a move this drastic if they didn't think it was serious. He's been picked up by the Knicks in the meantime...
