Germany won something! It has been a very long time since I heard them winning anything. When will Italy win something again?

Who/what is Ironman Hawaii? What are the Germans planning to use him/it for?
Making sense is overrated.

Ironman Hawaii ? Sounds like a real prestigious event, even though nobody's ever heard of it before.

My "superior" knowledge does not entail such meaningless and trivial events such as any "Ironman" competitions in Hawaii.

I'm not interested in any sports at all really. Macs are my sport. I would rather watch a hotdog competition than a lame "ironman" competition to be honest though.

Ironman was an event invented in the US and, despite people here not knowing much about it, triathlon is one of the fastest growing sports in the US over the last few years. there are a variety of distances of triathlon, of which ironman is the longest.

A standard ironman race is 2.4mile open water swim, 112mile bike, then 26.2miles run (a full marathon).

Ironman Hawaii is the world championship for ironman racing, other tri distances have their own seperate world championships. Commonly referred to simply as 'Kona' or 'the big show' it is one of the few world championships where non-professional athletes can race alongside the pros. Apart from the professionals, age group athletes can qualify for the worlds at events during the previous year. There are also lottery slots that you can apply for. This was because when the ironman went from being a small bunch of nutcases on a beach to being the large organised event it is now, the original instigator (a US navy commander called John Collins) stated that there should always be a place at Kona for the average athlete, the man in the street, the kind of person that started this crazy sport, and that should never be kept out of it.

Many of us train for years to reach ironman level, and spend many more years trying to qualify for the big show. I'll be competing in my first ironman event next March in New Zealand, I'm not sure I'll ever qualify for Kona until I'm old enough to get my slot just by completing a race, sometime in my 60's I would imagine.

If anyone actually cares, his name is Faris Al-Sultan and he finished in 8:14:17. Ironman is a sweet sport and I hope to finish in Kona one day, but this thread seems more like a troll at us "fat" Americans.

EDIT: Grr, database errors...
The female winner was from Switzerland, Natascha Badmann, and she finished in 9:09:30.

Who is the Hawaiian Tropic girl in the pic?

Yeah, too bad for you that people need to point out how miserably a country is doing because there aren't any natural desasters that would do exactly that.

Oh, and to the guy from Bavaria for winning the IH.

Have you been touched by his noodly appendage?

Maybe it's the high unemployment?

Really, I know nothing much about Germany. My wife's grandparents on her mother's side are 100% German. Last name Wedig if anyone cares.

I am familiar with Ironmans though. My brother has competed in a few. They are devestating. It usually took hima few days to recover.

Look, it isn't my fault that Germans are self-loathing and depressed. Even the bloody Welsh or Scottish have a greater joie de vivre than Germans. With Germans it's always: "O our country is broken and nobody can ever fix it" or "Please do not hate me because I am from Eastern Germany, my whole family may be unemployed but at least we are not Nazis, please do not think we are Nazis!"

the amount of knowledge in the lounge astounds.....

last years champion was from germany, too, but it was not this guy.

for everyone that doesn't know what they do in the ironman:

swimming in free water about 2,5 miles ( please correct me if i'm wrong on this one )
112 miles biking
and to top it all of: a marathon - 26 miles of runnig. all in the hawaiian heat.

one should have respect for the people even finishing it, not speaking about the best ones who finish in just 8.25 hours.

The disadvantage of a forum like this is that you have to deal with anyone who is intelligent enough to connect to the internet.

The unemployment rate is not higher than in the US. The difference is only a statistical effect.
In Germany, somebody is considered unemployed if he collected unemployment money or social welfare. This money will be paid indefinitely, so people remain unemployed until they find a job.

In the US, you are ONLY considered unemployed as long as you collect unemployment money. After 6 months (IIRC), you stop collecting money and drop out of the unemployment statistic. So even if you don't have a job, you are now counted as employed, because the government doesn't have to pay anymore.

See the difference ?

If the same standards and rules were used, the unemployment rate would be about the same.

Has anyone thought of a positive reason to live in Germany yet?

And turtle, anyone who has taken Introduction to Economics knows that what you posted is incorrect.
