Comments?
For me, this film is an excellent synopsis/statement regarding American culture. In all, being "weird" or "different" like the Darkos was the most normal - irony. From the Bible thumbers to the bullies, the Darkos stood as nonconformers in relation. That scene when Donnies Dad walks out of the school office laughing at what his son did and the resulting 6 month punishment was cool. His father and mother are bang on.

Great movie. The director's cut is a little better than the original in terms of making it more understandable (with the original you almost had to go to the website to understand it). On the other hand, I prefer the music of the original and think that the extra CGI in the going-through-the-vortex sequence in the director's cut is pretty lame.

The movie was crap, the only good thing about it was Jake Jellyfish (sic).

One of the reasons I posted this was my observation of "the family" in North America today. My "bang on" spawned from America's new chief justice John Roberts. His image is that of the Kennedys - a traditionalist like that of the baby boomers. The Darkos are, of course, nothing like that.
As a footnote, what exactly is "the family" to Gen X and Y?

Ok, you didn't like it. But everyone should agree, or better accept that most people have the understanding, that Donnie Darko is unlike any other movie. Superior images, a twisted, intelligent story which leaves room for interpretation, convincing acting (Jake Gyllenhaal is perfectly cast, as are others) and a great, dense soundtrack (non director's cut!).
Donnie Darko is one of my most favourite pictures. I can watch it again and again once in a while and I never get bored, and I love to watch it alone since it's atmosphere is so dense.

Waxcrash and the like:
I checked your links: all those discussions focus on the time travel aspect of the film as well as a slew of one liner comments about the movie.
Therefore, this discussion, specifically on family values related to the film, is on a different par. I think posting a "new", somewhat academic discussion of this movie is within the rules and better than just adding to an existing one with a different discussion thread.

you guys really want a mindfcuk?
honestly?
go watch Brazil.
Terry Gilliam is one great director and writer.
or if you are educated about time. and want a mind fcuk in both linear and nonlinear time cohesion.
watch 12 monkeys.
or watch THX 1138 if you want to get mad that it's been ripped of blatantly since it's creation.

why? Because some of us have already commented on the movie. By replying to the original topic the poster gains all of the prior commentary - by starting a new topic all of this is lost.
To generalise - by starting a new topic when others already exist it would lend to the idea that the person is ego-centric and an attention whore. I could be wrong - its monday morning and I am yet to have my coffee.

What extra things does the Directors Cut have? Any interesting scenes? I keep wanting to pick it up, but I already own the regular DVD.

From what I understand, the Director's cut is a tad longer and has either more CGI or contains CGI, whereas the nondirector's cut has none.

Different music and too much of it explains what exactly is going on (pure time travel) so it kills and viewer interpretation.
