Cool. I was actually thinking about this over the weekend. Unfortunately, I don't have a PhD in chemistry and was unable to formulate the material.

Really. This is cool.

I wonder if it'll be available at LensCrafters?

The Air Force didn't make it. Fraunhofer IKTS in Dresden did. The Air Force is just testing it. And it's not transparent aluminium. It's transparent aluminiumoxide.

Dang it... I do Rock chip repair for windshields. When this hits the consumer market... I'll have my degree and be working in a far more lucrative profession... never mind

Well they are testing it...but it is aluminum...the oxide is alumina which is the main componant of aluminum

Your chemistry is a bit suspect - Aluminium is an element, aluminium oxide is a compound - of Aluminium and Oxygen - therefore Aluminium is a component of Aluminium Oxide, not the other way round.

Erm. No. You have it all backwards. Aluminum (the metal) is extracted from alumina, similarly to how sugar is extracted from sugar cane. That doesn't mean that alumina is an ingredient of aluminum, just as it doesn't mean that sugar cane is an ingredient of sugar.

Actually you are all wrong about everything:

A) It's NOT aluminum oxide (Al2O3) it's aluminum oxynitride (AlON).

B) It was developed by Raytheon (Lexington, MS) not Fraunhofer IKTS (they are developing aluminum oxide which is NOT this material). Aluminum oxynitride is now being developed by Surmet Corp. under an agreement with Raytheon.

Funny how people try to make arguments about something they know absolutely nothing about and linking to articles that have nothing to do with this material.

Correction. "sugarcane was an ingredient of sugar".

Heh, no. Lots of sugar is made from sugar beets these days (especially in Europe), but worldwide, most is made from sugar cane.

there was good program on Discovery HD about Cuba and their export/farming of sugar cane (that the US can't get anymore). i think they still provide almost al the sugar cane used in the world outside the US.

also, Biography had a program on Hershey a couple nights ago. Mr. Hershey started a whole city there at the turn of the century so he could make sure he got the best of the best; he created schools/roads/homes/factories for the 'perfect' little town of workers just as he did in PA for the main plant/headquarters.

Screw all that. What about the whales? Doesn't anybody care about the whales? Has anyone done a headcount recently? Is there one missing?
