Has anyone been to http://bananarepublic.com recently? Not if you're using Safari! It's now explicitly blocked. I can only imagine the MBA that came up with this one ("I know! Let's take the most artistic, most affluent, and most influential segment of the market and send them away..."). Nevermind that Safari is more Web-standards-compliant than IE. Or that Apple's market share is rising (they already have a monopoly on mind share). It seems that many corporations still consider us a niche market and a target for discrimination.

Corporate world to Mac community: thanks for the iPod. Now go away.

That's what you get for giving a crap about BR anyway…
"Altruism is killing America. We who want to save America must repudiate this killer, root and branch. We must understand and explain to others that the acceptance of altruism necessitates the violation of individual rights... and that the arguments for altruism are baseless..."

They figure if you have enough money to afford their stupid clothes and pay $65 for a freakin shirt that you'll be able to afford a secondary PC just for surfing their website.

IMHO, BR has a great work pants. But they aren't going to get my web business.

It's simply foolish for an online store to have ANYTHING Internet Explorer only.

They don't. They just take it from the poor cats and dogs they capture on their streets and skin alive.

I tried to go Showtime's website a few days ago, and it doesn't allow access to anyone outside of the US. What's that all about?

It's the start of the corporate takeover of the Internet. You must get your Showtime stuff through a local licensed provider. Or else.

Showtime has subscribers in Muslim countries where access to scantily clad sexy US women and gay and lesbian stuff is very offensive. So they want to avoid problems and continue serving their overseas market without ruffling feathers.

They have a separate Arabic Showtime site and separate programming.

Like George Costanza, they are keeping their two universes from overlapping or whatever he called it.

All of this is my impression from casual observations and putting 2 & 2 together...
Give petty people just a little bit of power and watch how they misuse it! You can't silence the self doubt, can you?

That's rather unfourtunate. I wonder why they wouldn't have a "select country" option available so that if you are, as in my case, in Canada, you could access the Canada-only site but not the American one.

My office is like 5 blocks away. Maybe I'll just go knock on their door and complain.

replace "knock" with "poop" and "door" with "floor" and your plan is golden.

My guess? Like keeping the pron from the kids. Don't EVEN let em have the choice.

Dear readers, THAT is one of the things that Islam is about. You simply do not have the freedoms we are used to. The religious police (I KID YOU NOT) will get you for offenses like watching pron.

Wikipedia
Saudi Arabia
Religious police

An institution found in Saudi Arabia is the Mutaween, or religious police, also known as the Authority for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.

There are 3,500 officers assisted by thousands of volunteers, [2] whose job it is to enforce religious doctrine (Muslim Shari'a law as defined by the Saudi government) and to root out "un-Islamic" activities. They have the power to arrest any unrelated males and females caught socializing, and to ban consumer products and media, such as games and toys, various Western musical groups, and television shows. The Mutaween recently launched a website where people can file anonymous tips about "un-Islamic" activities.

On March 11, 2002 the Mutaween prevented schoolgirls from escaping from their burning school in Mecca because the girls were not wearing headscarves and abayas (black robes). Fifteen girls died and 50 were injured as a result. There was widespread public criticism, and the Saudi government and religious leaders condemned the Mutaween for their actions. [3] The Mutaween have also been the focus of many human-rights reports on religious persecution in Saudi Arabia. Their influence and power has declined recently.
