Man requests longer prison term to honor Larry Bird
Updated: Thursday October 20, 2005 1:16PM
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A man got a prison term longer than prosecutors and defense attorneys had agreed to -- all because of Larry Bird.
The lawyers reached a plea agreement Tuesday for a 30-year term for a man accused of shooting with an intent to kill and robbery. But Eric James Torpy wanted his prison term to match Bird's jersey number 33.
"He said if he was going to go down, he was going to go down in Larry Bird's jersey," Oklahoma County District Judge Ray Elliott said Wednesday. "We accommodated his request and he was just as happy as he could be.
"I've never seen anything like this in 26 years in the courthouse. But, I know the DA is happy about it."

So does this mean his cellmates can claim to have buggered Larry Bird?

At first I was pretty sure you were actually Rickey Henderson but than I realized that not even Rickey Henderson likes Rickey Henderson that much.

What a way to waste taxpayers' money. Stupid jerk judge. With the money it'll cost to incarcerate that fool even longer, you could have put some deserving youngster through college.

Won't matter, the guy will be out in 8-10 for good behavior.

I agree, MacNStein. I imagine the guy will get out early, so his adding to his sentence - whether a deft move or a really weird request - probably won't mean he'll stay that long. Heck, it may even indicate very good behavior. "Let the Parole Board note I added 3 years onto my sentence upfront."
Weird.

OJ and Michael Jackson are huge Robert Parrish fans... worked for them.
Too damn bad OJ didn't take his own number, he's have only been out a year before this guy.
The guy could have had serious problems had he been a Wayne Gretzky Fan!

Probably...1 year off for each year past the time he should have retired.

Well, Larry was originally from French Lick... there's a joke in there somewhere.
