Ah darn... there just TOO many of them.

Not in any order because I don't think one is better than the other.

Friday the 13ths parts 1,2 and 3

Halloween 1,2, and 4 (3 REALLY SUCKED!)

Re-animator

The Shining

Psycho

Dagon

Hellraiser

Phantasm movies (Cheesy I know but..)

Nightmare on Elm Street

I know there are TONS more I am forgetting..

I am a big horror movie buff.

I think it was because I couldn't watch them when I was younger because my imagination was just too active.

Some of the more obscure ones from the Japanese series are quite horrible, though. The first two ones are the best.

#1 Sound of Music

I've never seen the movie but whenever the commercial comes on and Julie Andrews sings that song, "the hill people"........."hills have eyes"......
oh "hills are alive with zombies"
my eyes start to bleed. does that count

a lady friend tried to force me to watch it. but she didn't have a good enough grip and I got away. just in time

Bad Taste? The awesome Peter Jackson Bad Taste? Good movie!
Evil Part 2
Night of the Living Dead (orig)
Alien
Exorcist
Hellraiser
28 Days Later
Pumpkinhead (just because Pumpkinhead was cool looking).

So does Gummo or Ichi count as horror? They were pretty horrifying in spots!
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

Moonmonkey:

hehe. Teen Wolf 2.

Great suggestions. Dawn of the Dead (latest release) keeps coming up on other sites. I think it will be scary. A few more:

From Dusk Til Dawn

Another was a warewolf flic from I think the late 70's early 80's. Anyway, a few more were released later. The end of one is when a new warewolf sits down at a diner and orders a steak "extra rare." If I could find the title of that that would be cool.

It's either An American Werewolf in London, or Howling.

Good to know somebody else liked that movie. I left shoe marks on the theater floor in front of me from trying to push myself away from the screen

The Japanese versions are definitely amazing as well, but not as frightening. Though the scenes with the three school girls are absolutely chilling and should have been incorporated into the remake. They do horror right over there.

I found the Japanese version a lot more frightening than the American one... probably because I understood too little of what was going on when I first saw the Japanese ones. I'd already seen four of the Japanese ones (I think) when I saw the American one, and I knew more or less exactly what was going to happen.

Though the scenes with the three school girls are absolutely chilling and should have been incorporated into the remake.
Indeed they should. Although I never quite understood exactly who the girl (the one who locks herself in her room) is. I kept getting confused, 'cause her father is one of the people who are trying to get to the bottom of the mystery, and in some scenes, the girl is about five, and then all of a sudden she's a teenager, and then we're back to five... very confusing movies.

Of course, it didn't help much that the first time I saw the first three ones, I saw them in Japanese with Traditional Chinese subtitles, so I understood 50% of the dialogue at best...

Yes! It was the Howling. I was young when I saw it, but that thing scared me. Solid storyline and quality acting from what I remember. I am going to the video store right now.

Apocalypse Now Redux.

I know, it's not a horror movie, but the build up is efficient and the number of bodies, the disinterest and detachment of the people was unforgettable for me. I saw it on an IMAX screen.

Careful, I think it's III or IV (whichever one is in the castle) that they managed to get the absolute worst actors of the B- community. Although I really liked the beginning of it though, I wouldn't recommend watching past the first 10 minutes.

1) The Thing (1982 - John Carpenter)
2) Scream (1996 - Wes Craven)
3) Halloween (1978 - John Carpenter)
4) Exorcist (1973 - William Friedkin)
5) A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984 - Wes Craven)

There are others but these are the first 5 I can think of that are damn good. I guess I don't see Alien as a horror movie. It's a sci-fi thriller, or something. Well, it is a blurry line between thriller and horror movies sometimes but this is the way I call it.

cheers

Good other choices..but Ring 2? Not my cup of tea.

Alien is classified as Horror, Aliens is the sci-fi thriller.

Good point. Alien is your classic `haunted house` but in space. Aliens in a massice sci-fi action flick, maybe the best action flick ever. Mmm... extended edition...

You mean The Exorcist: The Beginning? Um. It could have been good. Great choice of actors for the characters, I liked the story too. The problem is that the director and producer were 12-year-olds.

It's painful to watch cuz it could have been good, but it really, really, really sucked.
