I have seen an ad lately for SBC DSL services. Since SBC partners with Yahoo! for some features (their portal is an SBC-branded Yahoo! site), they were pushing the Yahoo! Music service, calling it the "Number 1 On-line Music Source". They had a reference at the bottom of the screen saying it was from a June 2005 Nielsen survey. What qualifies Yahoo! Music as number one? Is iTunes not considered "on-line" since it is a stand alone application? Has Apple seen these ads?

Perhaps the fact that all Yahoo members are Yahoo Music members by default - if so, they are easily 'number one'.

Marketers are not held accountable for telling the truth. I think the simple fact is they can claim anything they want.

Granted. But, they quoted a June 2005 Nielsen study. What was in that study that let them make this claim?

I think they're claiming the top spot based on the number of people who visit the website. See http://blogs.zdnet.com/ITFacts/?p=8262. That's like a retail store claiming superiority over its competitors not because of sales, but because more people see the sign.
