This topic was brought up on the radio the other day and I thought it would be a good forum topic:
Why are some Halloween Costumes acceptable and some not? Take for instance, a Nazi Soldier or Osama Bin Laden, these are obviously not acceptable halloween costumes, but yet people dress up like the Devil all the time! The Devil, if you actually believe in your own religion, is worse than both of these earlier examples. One of the most popular costumes for Christians (or anyone for that matter) this halloween will be the devil or something satanic than anything else. Is it that they do not believe their own religion? Is it that people can't put a real face on the devil? People can hardly use the real reason why people dress up as the reason for why they will dress up that way, because the common man does not know the origins of halloween. People will also be dressing up as Vikings, who raped and pillaged, and pirates, who terrorized the seas. So why is there this contradiction and what makes a good costume vs. a bad one?

Yeah it is interesting. Prince Harry Whatever dressed up as a Nazi and that was obviously a faux-pas, but people can dress up like pirates and that's fine, even though they killed and even still do kill people all across the world.
Most people don't know that Halloween is a Pagan festival of course (as most Christian festivals - Halloween not at all a religious festival of course - have Pagan roots, a way for the Church to gain acceptance is to assimilate the festivals that everyone has, thus Christmas, Easter etc are based off old Pagan festivals).
Anyway, there may be some difference because the Devil is supernatural. Many religions have festivals where people dress up as gods, good or evil, as a way of honouring them, appeasing them, or warding them away. So it's perhaps not so hard to understand the Devil costumes, but pirates, nazis, serial killers etc. is different - these are based off humans so dressing as them serves no purpose other than to scare. Since Halloween has lost it's meaning apart for the few Pagans around, I suppose if the costume scares it's a good one. Nazis aren't scary though, just a bit sick, it's still too close to home for a lot of people.

Halloween is, in fact, another example of a pagan festival appropriated by the Church. "All Hallows Eve(ning)" is the night before All Saints' Day.
Also, some Protestants (it seems especially common among the Calvinist/Reformed flavors) celebrate October 31 as Reformation Day, the anniversary of the day Martin Luther nailed the 95 Theses to the cathedral door.

From the examples you cited, it would seem that "evil" costumes are acceptable if they don't appear to be targeted at anyone specific. Thus, devils and pirates are OK while Hitler is not.

Don't go to a Cuban household with a Fidel Castro outfit. Don't stand in the middle of the 'hood with a KKK suit. Don't visit your Jewish colleague with a Hitler look. Don't go to the convent with the Pastor+SucklingKid costume.
If you don't care about hurting anyone's feelings, then go ahead.

Nazi costumes are perfectly fine for the royal family.
