Today's MacNN has an interesting news about the following article:
http://technology.guardian.co.uk/wee...606797,00.html
Column: Apple could learn from past mistakes
After transforming the digital music industry with the iPod, Apple is on a high. But the company has enjoyed success before - only to see it vanish, warns Kieren McCarthy. "This is not the first time Apple has found itself with the best product in a market it has almost single-handedly created. And yet the Mac - launched with the famous TV advertisment 1984, which was aired once during that year's Superbowl - is now no more than a bit player. The Newton is long dead, and the Apple II is a museum piece." McCarthy says Apple's innovation "comes with a price: arrogance and a deep-seated control instinct." Having created a market, Apple's conviction has "frequently mutated into stubbornness and it has seen the market run off in a different direction once competitors have caught up."
I wholeheartedly agree with this guy, and as a matter of fact this "vanish" scenario is likely to happen again once Windows Vista arrives and people continue to stick with their initial investment in Windows PCs. I mean, think about it.... No matter how much my wife thinks the Mac is better, how good it looks in Apple Store, those things are all temporary, and people will eventually cool down from the current iPod/iMac excitement, slowly come back to their sense and realize they still have a reality to deal with: Everyone uses Windows, and they have to be compatible.
I can recreate something roughly equivalent of Mac mini using one of those mini-ATX cases. Then, you can hack XP and put Aqua interface, and viola! You have something that works just as good as Mac mini, most likely with faster processor and more RAM for cheaper price.
Pricewatch is my friend.....

"Everyone" doesn't use windows. I don't. And, I know another guy who doesn't.
And I read that article with a completely different interest than you. It seems Apple isn't repeating the mistakes of it's past. More people are buying them than have in a long time.
You really need to deal with that issue with you wife. Instead of surreptitiously going behind her back and discussing this with us. If she wants a Mac get her a Mini. They're only $400 now. You probably have that much invested in the software that comes free with it. And just think, no ad-ware, spy-ware, or anti-virus software to buy. And all the free time you'll have to tweak the network stacks on your own computer instead of hers will give you more time on here to spread half truths and spout your ignorance.
And you must be a man of low morals because if MacNN targeted me with porn related ads like they do you and no one else I would never return. But you must not really be bothered by them too much. Wait, isn't your IE patch supposed to block pop-ups? Maybe it's Microsoft who's really letting you down here.

its not just about looks, OS X works better then Windows. Looks help but in the end most of my Mac Friends stick with Mac because Windows just SUCKS. I build PCs on a side company, ive been using Windows as long as MacOS, I have a PC almost twice as powerful (by stats) as my Mac and I spend 10 times more time on my Mac because it never ****s up.

A lot of people do use windows, true. But you don't need to use windows to be compatible.
Use whatever technology where it is appropriate. At work we are windows, although only one set of software (as far as I'm aware) requires that and that's Autodesk Inventor Series. We do have two macs for the guys in publishing because it makes sense.
A lot of the big engineering apps are recognising the need to be compatible, i.e. not just run on windows. They are porting to linux, etc.

I don't understand the premise of your post, james. The excerpt you quoted is talking about the iPod and Apple's track record with maintaining market share. You're talking about Apple and the Mac in general, which is a very different subject. The iPod is not invincible, but it has achieved such deep market penetration, it's going to take very strong competition and a lot of Apple screw ups to threaten its dominance. A great many people have iPods and they love them. The majority of that user base is going to continue buying iPods in the future.

I hope someone doesn't twist this the wrong way, but how long can Apple ride the iPod?
It seems they have recognized that it won't be dominant unless it evolves, hence the move into downloadable TV. If things keep evolving like this, I really don't see them loosing momentum.
Furthermore the Intel transition is going to be interesting in many ways. In terms of compatibility, one will likely be able to run Windows within Mac OS with good performance. There also seem to be the possibility of dual boot. I only see this making Apple stronger.
We should probably just ignore this thread. He does this like every week.

You may be able to hack XP to look like Aqua, or even act like aqua. (If you feel like writing your own shell...) But for it to "work just as good?" That's a joke.
Let's try this on youre wanna-be mac. I say would be mac because this would most definately not work on your would be mac mini. But lets say you did the same hacks to XP you would to your wanna-be mini, except its actually a fairly powerful workstation.
Try running LightWave3D Layout, LightWave3d Modeler, 5 windows of firefox, Vue 5 Infinite, iTunes, Photoshop, and iChat simultaneously. Then take a shot at being productive in each application. As in, switching between apps a lot. I've done it. I'll me modeling in LW Modeler, building a scene in LW Layout, building that scene's background in Vue, creating texture maps in Photoshop, while looking at various artistic reference online in Firefox, while chatting with like 3 people on iChat, while listening to music and changing tracks in iTunes. It does it, literally without a hitch. The worst that happens is one or two dropped frames during Expose moves.
On windows though... I would be using Animation:Master for 3D and Firefox for browsing, and it would crash. All the time. And mind you, Animation:Master is much more lightweight than LightWave. And that is with just A:M and Firefox. Nothing else. And lets not forget--if I move any non-maximized window over my A:M window, it erases all the OpenGL parts as it moves over them! And then when I let up my mouse it OpenGL has to redraw it!! This "erasing" effect as NEVER happened ONCE on OSX.
Or try this combo--Final Cut Pro, Soundrack Pro, and Motion running simultaneously, with of course Firefox and iChat, and QuickTime as well. Well, I guess you can't really check that one becuase FCS doesn't exist for PC. Another reason for me to stay here.
Everyone uses Windows, and they have to be compatible.
VERY stupid comment.
Star Wars Episode III recently came out on DVD, and I wen ahead and watched the making of disc, for the duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin on Mustafar.
Guess what? About half the people were using Macs, and half the people were using PC's. Incompatable? Not if you're a pro.
