If you wanted to build your ideal Mac, what would you put in it? Consider this like the Simpsons episode where Herb got Homer to design his ideal car.

The Mac Mini for me is probably closest in the current Apple offering to what I'd like.

- It would have to be headless because I can't stand having built-in displays any more. But a G5 version or Intel version would be nice (G5 is probably too hot). G4s are old news.
- Small like the Mini but with standard hard drives and a tray loading optical drive. In the future, I'd like to see flash based hard drives. They already have flash-based IDE drives at 60GB and higher but they are expensive.
- Power button and eject buttons on the front.
- 3 usb ports and 2 firewire ports. Ideally I would like some new age optical solution. The same goes for ethernet - just one standard connection for all devices - even monitors can have the same cable, you're just passing data after all.
- Easy access for upgrading components - put screws on the machines instead of clips. If I want to put a Geforce 7800 in a Mini then I should be able to along with 2GB Ram at least. I can do that to a similarly priced PC. Macs should also use normal graphics cards instead of Mac versions so I can pick up a card at a local shop.
- desktops should come with a battery on the power supply so that if there is a power cut, I can shut down my machine safely like with laptops. At least it could be an option.
- I think the power cable should have those screws like the display cable. The Mini power lead is really loose.
- on a design note, I think the normal Mini case should be replaced with metal all over and a white Apple symbol like the powerbook.
- the Apple keyboards should have a power key again so all machines can soft-reset with the old command-alt-power key combo. It can replace the eject key, which I don't use.

That should do for now. Also, feel free to add improvements you would make to OS X.

- I would like native support for themes for example. Aqua's nice but change is also nice.
- Also, I would like the installer app to notify me of what it is doing to the filesystem as it goes. If you download a malicious app and it asks for your password, at no stage during its execution does it say what the password is needed for - it could easily overwrite your entire hard drive.
- I would like an easy way to downgrade upgrades. If maybe OS X upgrades were like aperture files where the changes are saved and can be removed at any time.
- an option to keep a small percentage of the system resources free at all times so that no process can hang up the system entirely and that certain system features like volume change, expose or dashboard don't hiccup.
- it's still not snappy enough. The performance has improved greatly since the early versions but something must be wrong when I can zip through a pdf document on an old 350MHz pentium with Windows 98 faster than on a 1.25GHz G4 with 1GB Ram. There should be no jitter when scrollling documents or resizing windows at all.

My ideal Mac would be an implant. 2 terrahertz Brain processor, but only 256 Meg of RAM (short term memory).

Something without a display, one fullsize hd space, one AGP or PCIX or whatever the hot graphics card slot is, and that's basically it. Basically something like the mini with the option to put in a sweet video card.

A 17" Powerbook with a 3GHz, dual core processor (G5, Intel, whatever - I don't care), 2+ gigs of RAM, a GeForce Go 7800 GTX and a 2.5", 7200rpm, 250GB, SATA HD ... all in the same form factor as the current 17" Powerbook.

And no, I do not need a fscking iSight built into my laptop.

A 12in Powerbook with a frickin nice screen. Thats about it.

The only thing I would ever complain about on my 12in Powerbook. But I still love it.

Quad Power Mac

hehe,

Actually my ideal machine would probably be a combo machine. Of course this isn't one that I think Apple should make since it'd be crazy expensive.

But my machine would basically be an iHouse. Similar idea to what Sony had with the Cell only done with normal processors. There would be several machines and they'd all be clustered. The main base comp would be a quad processor either whatever Intel Chips Apple'll be using with the Power Macs or G5s, (probably because of the aspects of the system it'd be mainly intel). Actually scratch that, 4 intel chips for new apps and 2 G5 co-processors for old PPC code! High end graphics card with tons of RAM running dual 30 inch Cinemas. As well a PCI E graphics card that would also power two smaller 17 inch Displays.
As well combined with this machine, able to use the power of the main machine would be a PowerBook like laptop, of course using a Pentium M processor, able to get great battery life as well very thin, with a 15.4 inch wide screen.
The PowerMac and PowerBook would actually both support Wacom graphics tablets, the PM would have an external one, where as a smaller wide format one would be in place on the PowerBook, allowing the screen to be a lil taller to accommodate the built in iSight .
Of course the PowerBook would have a 7200rpm HD
The Power Mac would also be connected by Fiber channel to a very large RAID array.

As well by my bed would be an iMac like computer of course to match the rest it'd be aluminium, and it'd be wall mounted so I could use a wireless keyboard and mouse.

And of course there would be AirPort expresses in every room with their own dedicated speakers. Oh and each room would also have an old iMac style terminal to control iTunes and other aspects in the house.

Again not something I think Apple should do, but something that'd be freaking awesome!

That's cool! If they made dual processer G4 minis or single G5's I'd consider getting one with that case mod expansion thing. it looks hot.

You know, you probably wouldn't be able to sleep at night with all that machinery in your room. I can't even sleep when my single tower is on. I suppose you could shut everything down at night, but then you loose out on bittorrent time (anime, nothing illegal).

(1) Tablet convertible-style notebook w/ Tablet OS X
(2) Powerbook styling/materials
(3) Dual boot with Windows XP Tablet Edition
(4) Dell pricing

...That shouldn't be a problem, right?

Just give me an intel mac that can play Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun while still letting me keep all my other Mac programs. I'd be a happy man.

Oh yea, Quad processors with hyperthreading would be nice. (Mmmmm.... compiling on eight virtual cores.)

They're too slow. If it had dual 1.4s I'd get one. But a single 1.4 is slooowwwwwww. Plus the video card sucks donkey balls and is unupgradeable.

What do you do on your computer that would make a single 1.4ghz machine too slow?

I am honestly curious.

Seriously, if the Mac Mini had a videocard slot I'd be all over one. The 1.4ghz G4 could always be overclocked to 1.8 with watercooling or something, and firewire solves the HD problem. ARGH. APPLE! If you can make a $500 mac with an expensive laptop optical drive and expensive laptop HD, why can't you make one with a graphics card slot and regular fullsize drives for the same price!?!?!?!
