Elvenking.
Rhapsody (with song titles like "The March Of The Swordmaster" and "The Village Of Dwarves" you can't really go wrong, can you?).

are you looking for black metal? more melodic or thrashy or ? i suppose it doesnt matter. here are some bands that i like. take it or leave it.

Opeth - really melodic, rarely screamy, really good. their album "blackwater park" is life changing, amazing.

Mayhem - self claimed "forefathers" of True Norwegian Black Metal. I really don't like much of their stuff, but their story (murder, church burning, etc, look for the book "lords of chaos") is pretty entertaining.

Burzum - another old school black metal band. really gritty sounding. catchy, somehow. tied in with the "lords of chaos" story.

marduk - really fast black metal. the album "panzer division marduk" is amazing.

Emperor - probably what i think of first when i think "black metal". another band who has done it for a really long time (they might claim to be the forefathers of black metal, too). tied in with that "lords of chaos" story. technically and musically excellent. sadly broken up.

cradle of filth - hot topic mall kid black metal. their early stuff (dusk and her embrace, cruelty and the beast) is excellent.

there are millions more. what happened to mr_frost?

OMG power metal LOL... they're lyrics so sooooo effing courny its both hilarious and painful to listen to at the same time!! Which is really unfortunate, because both the groups you mention have a lot of musical talent... they're just cheezy as hell.

I'm not sure if they qualify as Nordic or Viking (I doubt it) but SuidAkra is a very good, unique band. They have a very folk/Celtic sound actually, although recently they have taken on a more modern tone. My favorite album of theirs would have to be Emprise to Avalon--a theme album that relates the story of King Arthur. Musically, it's split faily even between death metal and mellow acoustic stuff. They implement these two very contrasting/conflicting styles very nicely.

Unfortunately, you won't find their CDs on American shelves. AFAIK, they only sell in Germany (where they are from) and Japan. You can still get them, but they must be imported.

However, his new record "Unleash the Fury" is pretty damned awesome, and reminds me of the Yngwie of old. Maybe he's back on track.

When I'm making my mead, I usually feel compelled to blast some Bathory! Hammerheart and Twilight of the Gods are awesome. RIP Quorthon. I consider these 2 as the ultimate Viking music. Viking origins, viking lyrics.

Decoryah. unique metal band from scand. has what I'd call a viking sound.

Other scandanavian metal bands (not viking themed, just from scandanavia): Memento Mori, Therion, Stratovarius, Nightwish, Epica. I'm sure more, but I just can't think any more today.

Elvenking I'd call Pagan/Celtic, not Viking. Kind of like Skyclad. Awesome, but not really Viking.

Malmsteen for sure. Very much into Viking themes. I gave up on him, but if MacnStein is right, I might have to give him another chance. He thinks he's a god and his music got boring. complacent.

Nightwish, Apocalyptica, 69 Eyes and Stratovarius are the only ones that come to mind. All Finnish. If it doesn´t have to be metal, then HIM and Rasmus might do. One that´s also very good is a band called Hardcore Superstar which comes from Sweden (I think).
