You would never guess how long it takes to install the GNU Microchip PIC utilities. Pretend you are an OSX tech support and you have to install this software in my computer. How much would you charge?

Well, but how much of that time is just unsupervised "processing" and compiling ?

Ask for OS X binaries through Fink, or the project maintainer... Or, compile it once, and simply zip up your /sw directory and transfer this directory to another machine. Everything is self contained within this directory.
