Good Afternoon-
I'm trying to convince one of my programmers that he could do well on a Macintosh platform, but he's afraid of the interface. If we were in the same state, I could easily show him my machines, but that's not an option right now.
I don't want to buy him a machine he'll refuse to use, so I thought of a compromise- I could rent a month of a Mac someplace, accessable via a Virtual server. (Apple remote desktop, or VNC, or whatnot)
I found a few places online that rented out Dedicated Mac mini servers, for about $100 / month- The thing is, the reason the price is so high, is they're also charging primarily for the high-bandwidth the machine will use, since they're presuming it would be used as a webserver, or the like, not just through a Remote Desktop connection..
So I'd appreciate any suggestions at places I could look, to find a better deal? Paying 1/5 of the total price of a machine, to be able to use it for a month seems a little steep, esp. when I'm not using it as they intend anyway
Thoughts welcome.
-Colin

ARD and VNC are WAY too slow to be used effectively over the internet. It'd be a great way to scare the poor guy away from the Mac.
Just spend $500 and get a Mac mini with at least 512MB of RAM (ideally 1GB). If after a month or two he hates it, keep it for yourself, or repurpose it in the company.

turtle, actually, they just colo your existing Mac mini.
I was looking for something more like -
http://www.rackmounted.com/macmini.php
I may end up buying one of the Apple Refurbs for $400, and sending him that as a test- If he likes it, we get the PowerMac.
It just seems like it's more expensive than it has to be for a test.
Perhaps it can't be helped.

Why not just make a big video of you working with a few key elements.
Apple also has a very liberal return policy on their Mac mini I believe... you can have one up to a month and return it without a minimal restocking fee.

That offer was cancelled the day after it was started. There's no more 30-day trial.

*The closest is Netopia's Timbuktu. VNC (which Apple uses in ARD) is far too slow. OS X's graphics don't compress well for VNC's algorithms. VNC is slow even on switched 100Mbps ethernet. Over any internet connection, it's pretty much useless for OS X.
