I was wondering, I've always wanted to live in Miane. I want to go somewhere secluded and not crowded. somewhere that isnt too far from a lake preferably. I wouldnt care if i had to drive 45mins or so to get to the nearest town, and no, it doesnt have to be a big town.

I'm hoping someday to live in Maine and wanted to get suggestions where the best places would be. I'm going to be scouting places for the future.
Thanks in advance

I went to college in Maine. Nice place. Really cold.

How do you plan on earning a living?

I have a brother who used to live in Maine building yachts. He now lives in Florida living on his little fixer-upper sailboat. Best advice he gave me about Maine was to live in Florida.

Yes, it IS cold, LOL!

We have a house up there in Bar Harbor. Cottage, actually.

I LOVE IT THERE.

I truly do love it.

But, I only go there once or twice a year, only between June and August, and that's it. I love the people, the beautiful views, everything.

It's a lot like Washington (state) actually, but Washington is better because it looks a lot the same and it's a LOT warmer - especially in the winter months.

Only in Maine, though, do I get fresh lobster rolls, no-nonsense New England vernacular and perspectives, and a LOT OF ROOM. One thing about it there, though? There is an overriding sense of loneliness at times, at least for me. The economy isn't so great and it can be really rural. Correspondingly, the people sometimes are not very educated and you have to take them at face value. In the normal (non-tourist) parts of Maine you aren't going to find Starbucks with built-in hot spots, Apple Store, etc. I couldn't live there full time I don't think. I went up there a couple of summers ago for a month-long stay and I really liked it, but I missed Florida a lot. Sunny warm beaches, white sand, bathwater warm sea, palm trees, and the rest of it. I can only visit Maine, not live there.

I researched Maine for a while. Looked great. I like cold and rural.
Then discovered that I'd be paying a ridiculous amount of tax and they wouldn't allow me to mess about with vehicle suspension lifts.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
That's where there's thunder... and the wind shouts back.

Check out Bar Harbor, Ogunquit, Wells, Portland- different types of areas

And yes, it's cold.

Did you know the toothbrush was invented in Maine?

Otherwise it would be called a teethbrush!

Very beautiful place actually. Really. Read some Stephen King Books!

As a resident of another rainy, cold, rural place (Scotland) I can say that sunshine beats cold any day of the year. Granted, it is brilliant during spring and summer but what do you do for the other 8 months of the year?

Even London seems warm and welcoming in comparison.

My advice: move somewhere closer to the equator.

Yeah- taxes are unreasonably high.

We don't take kindly to out of staters

haha just kidding.

wow, so only one from maine chimes in, awesome.

I grew up outside (15 min) of portland, kinda like an hour outside boston, Except I have neighbors that raise sheep.

Granted you aren't gonna see the common amenities of a big city in the country, cause you know why? its the country.

Anything north of Augusta (except for Bangor) gets really sparse for big city things, but thats expected.

Places that won't cost you an arm and a leg to live would be more like Standish, Brunswick, Liver Moore Falls, Auburn

You want a really cheap place to live? Check out Rumford, Its a Mill town, but its got every thing you need. 30 min from Sunday River and a hour from SugarLoaf. Every thing a large town would have.

My Great Grand father passed away 4 years ago, and we had to sell his house, it was a 4 bed room 1 bath duplex built by the mill around the turn of the century. It sold for $27,000.

As for the cold, you get used to it, we only have a week or two usually that it dips below -10 or so. Also remember the ocean will keep you pretty warm (till it freezes that is) and costal towns such as Rockland will never really dip below 0 for any lengthy time. Its also much much worse north.

All I can say is bring on the snow, I got my All East Pass new skis and free rooms at Sunday River and SugarLoaf.

I GOT WASTED WITH PHIL SHERRY!!!
