Jeff ******* says (9:19 AM): Eww, Ottawa is gross. It's infested with politicians, and presently, 1 Harper as well.

It weighs less. This was done several years ago and while mildy amusing it's also dumb,

The car is FWD so rear tires (on the drag strip at least) are not soo important.
RWD Mustangs etc have been using spare tires for years as a cheap front drag tire. Danger, Will Robinson.
This Nissan has been on the net for years. Thanks a lot for including the performance numbers too!

What track lets you do that?!
Anyway, this has been posted before. And it's old.

I hope these guys will be around to accept their inevitable Darwin award. Then again, at least it's an improvement over the guy that strapped a jet assisted take off unit to his '67 impala, which is still my favorite "how to make my car go as fast as possible" tale.

On a FWD car, the rear wheels are just along for the ride. They don't do anything really. HOWEVER, the spare was probably lighter weight than that big rim, and with such a narrow tire, probably provided less rolling resistence. Rotational mass is bad. Lighter wheels= quicker times.

I know! GO NISSAN!
bhahahaha. I think it's great that the Subaru Forester XT is faster than the 350Z, and tows more, and hauls more, etc etc etc. I think it's cheaper too.

Yes, I understand why they put the spare on. Having different rear tires more than makes up for the couple pounds of weight they save. I would rather have matching tires and 10 extra pounds than mismatched tires, regardless of whether they are the driving tires or not.

Dude. You DID notice all they are doing is driving in a straight line right? This car needs to go straight. It doesn't need to turn.

Well you need decent alignment to go in a straight line.

They took a semi-riced out nissan and were trying to get the 1/4 mile time down as low as possible. First thing they did was replace the ricer wheels with the stock ones, which sped it up. Then they started ripping pieces of it off.

Meh. Not really. To the non car people who are cluttering this thread up with lack of car knowledge, do you think that mismatched tires really affects how fast this car goes? Do you think that it needs 'handling'?

This is clearly not the case here. In this case all four tires are in contact with the ground. When one of the tires is a mismatch (same axle not front and rear) it has a negative effect on the vehicle. I understand they want lighter since its faster, I am just questioning if that particular exchange was worth it. Getting a skinny girl to drive instead of the guy would have saved the same amount of weight.

SSharon, I didn't notice that the rears were diff. from each another. We don't know if the photo of the car in motion doesn't have two rear spares. Either way, if they're the same height, it'll go down the quarter mile as straight as it would if they were the same tires..
Ca$h, Moroso Motorsports Park in West Palm Beach lets you, at least it used to let you run with spares up front on a RWD car. I've also seen it done in many Mustang/GM performance car mags. Granted they're not for 9 second rides, but I've seen cars running 12's and similar at WELL OVER the stated mph for a typical spare tire. : )

Holy **** that's crazy! If you tried to pull something like that around here the track would kick your ass out. Spares are only designed to go about 55mph max.
