"This joint venture relates to the creation of joint manufacturing operations," said Rick Clancy, senior vice president of communications for Sony Electronics, San Diego. "It is conceivable that there could be a variety of disk-drive requests produced, based on requests for a variety of customers." Those drives include CD-based drives, DVD drives, Blu-Ray, and "perhaps even that other format," Clancy said.

Somehow I don't think I'll be buying any discs made by Sony.

I'm CERTAINLY NOT buying anything from Sony. I had built my home stereo system from Sony components. Much of my classical music collection is on Sony CDs. But I'm not going to support them anymore. I don't care if it's Sony media or Sony electronics.

Realistically, how can you NOT buy Sony media ? I don't get this Sony-boycotting for the good causeā„¢. Sure I agree with the point but it's next to impossible if you happen to like the music they sell. You could stop listening to music or watching certain movies I guess..

I reckon they will try and pull a similar stunt with BR-DVD discs, that they tried with CDs. IF their spyware wasnt discovered,i dont think they would have done anything about it. Personally, im going to have a hard time trusting their media products from now on. And here we thought winXP anti-piracy was bad....these guys are developing spyware and deploying it without informing the public. *shudder* big brother II.

I don't have to buy new CDs from Sony, and I don't need to buy new electronics from them either. And I can usually find a way to transcode (or just burn an audio copy and then rip it) anything I need to get from a second hand Sony-labeled CD. Either way, until they get their hands out of my computer, I'm not buying anything new from them.
