This type of thing happens every year on the day after Thanksgiving. Laptops aren't the only things that cause people to act this way. In my area it was socks that were 50% off that caused stampedes. No fights occurred from the sock sale, but some elderly people were stampeded on. Another reason for me to avoid shopping on buy nothing day...

Throwing a laptop 20 feet in the air and a group of people jumping on top of it is normal?

No, its not normal. But in the US, on the day after Thanksgiving, it is not shocking either.

Some dumbass school county decided that paying more money for Windows laptops was somehow cheaper than paying less money for iBooks.

So the iBooks were put for sale for $50 each. Thousands of people showed up for the laptops, a couple people were treaded at the hospital for stuff like broken ankles and arms.

What was really scarry, though, was that some guy's baby stroller was completely trampled and destroyed. Luckily he was holding his kid at that point, but still scary.

It doesn't matter what day it is, if you offer something people want (sometimes even something people don't want) cheap enough, and you don't do it in an orderly way, people will get violent.

And we're talking about WalMart here. The people who shop at WalMart aren't exactly cultured enough to refrain from acting like total idiots when faced with cheap prices. Sometimes I think WalMart does this sort of thing on purpose. Not necessarily to invoke brawls, but to stir up people's emotions in order to create an urgency. By inviting chaos in the long lines, they make people feel like if they don't get in on this deal they've failed at something. That they're missing out on the deal of the year. Some people just can't let that sort of thing pass them up.

It all boils down to people being dumb. And we all know that there is no shortage of that sort of thing in the world (especially the U.S.).

Ah, yes. I remember that sale, but I did not realize that it turned violent. Again, only in America.
