I think I've seen rumor reports of at least one of Apple's Mac lines going to Intel at MWSF except for the Power Mac. First it was the Mini, then the iBook, then the iMac, then the iBook again, and now today the PowerBook. Which do you think will get an Intel processor at MWSF in January, if any?

Citigroup says its going to be the Powerbook. I think if so, then it will be Powerbooks, Mac mini, and iBooks all at MWSF.

I have heard that there will be a Intel iBook released at MWSF.

I'll hedge my bet on the Mini.
BUT
I'm hoping for all of them minus the PowerMac (not that I don't want that, just don't think it'll happen). I believe the other 4 could all make appearances.

The iMac and the Power Mac don't need to. All the rest really could use it. I expect the Mac mini, I expect the iBook. And I hope for the PowerBook.

I need an Intel Powerbook. AnandTech published today a review of Yonah, the Intel Mobile CPU that -presumably- will go into the next breed of Mac laptops, and I really liked what I saw. Low power consumption plus dual cores.
so here's to hoping ....

Who the crap voted for the Power Mac?
Anyways, yeah; The PowerBook is hurting badly. Had the 7448 G4 made it into the recent revision, I'd probably have banked on the Mini being most likely to go Intel in January. But the 7447A really doesn't have enough oomph to carry the PowerBook now, let alone through spring or summer of '06.

Heheh.. I voted for the PowerMac, just because my conscious told me to. Sometimes you just have to do what your body tells you to do.

I hope the PowerBooks, so that Rev. B’s are available before the start of the next school year. I know a lot of college-bound seniors, myself included, who would love Rev. B IntelBooks to kick off freshman year.

If the PowerBook is Rev A in June still but hasn't had any big issues I'd buy. If not I'm screwed .

Were I a betting man, I'd put money on the Mini. It'll have been a year since its intro with only one update, which was tiny w/no fanfare. I'd love to see a 13" widescreeen somethingBook, too. Eug's post makes sense, in that they could split the PB line between architectures at first. So I vote Mini + (maybe) PowerBook.

Once they put out an intel based product, the OS would have to follow. Then, nanoseconds later it's hacked and all the PC types have free Tiger. I don't think ANY will be there.

So, you're saying that if the release it later on that it won't get hacked ?

I don't understand the people that are saying that the iBook will be updated first. Virtually any speed enhancement of the iBook would render it faster than the current PowerBooks. By all accounts, the change to Intel will mean quite a big speed boost, which would certainly make the iBook faster than the current PowerBook. Apple wouldn't do that.
Which would mean they'd either have to update the PowerBook to Intel too or put a G5 into it. I think they would have gone to G5 on the last revision if they could have plus I don't think they want to market the G5 as superior to their new Intel models. So, my reasoning is that they won't update the iBook to Intel until they can update the PowerBook to Intel too.

PowerBook users are more likely than iBook users to use their computers for things like FCP, PhotoShop, high-end science/math apps: things that may not be (read: probably won't be, except maybe stuff from Apple) ready for Intel for quite a while after the initial switch. Those people won't want to run that kind of software in emulation, so they might still go with PBs even if the iBooks are faster for Mail and iApps.
If Apple's own pro Apps and Dev Tools are ready out of the gate with Universal Binaries (and they might be working perfectly now, AFAIK), it'd make some sense for them to release Intel PBs, but there are still people who use their PBs to run pro Apps that aren't Apple's and will do better on a PPC.
On the other other hand, there are folks out there who buy PowerBooks over iBooks because they seem professional but still mostly use them for e-mail, web, and MS Office. Those people would probably do okay with an Intel. That's why I think it'd make sense for Apple to make the li'l PB Intel and leave the 2 big'uns PPC for a few more months. But if they do that, they could still bring out Intel iBooks before switching all the PBs over.

I only hope we will not all be fooled. It would be a major disappointment for me if I can't buy an Intel iBook early next year. I totally jumped on the January-release-train. I'd have bought a new imac if those rumors wouldn't have so strongly emerged…

I'd rather the mini come out first so it will be easier for projects like WINE to come to Mac OS X. Virtualization is one of the most exciting parts about the switch for me. I want to be able to run certain productivity apps that are Windows-only on the Mac at faster speeds than Virtual PC currently provides.

This is good news, now Mac users won't have to fret about how the XBox360 w/ its IBM processor is faster than the PowerMac.
