Yeah, yeah, but it creaps in here every year anyway. So here goes: both AppleInsider and Spymac are saying that either new iBook or new PowerBook will be out. But they both agree it'll be a laptop. Just today, I saw this blurb:

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets...i=2627&p=1

Anandtech got their hands on some of the first Yonah dual core Pentium-Ms. Its official launch is for January.

If anything, maybe a dual core Mac mini? I'd just be curious to try out ANY Intel based Mac, be it a mini, iBook, or PowerBook.

I'm gonna miss AltiVec.

someone, i think ai, said a consumer laptop would make sense since pro apps like adobe cs won't be ready by january...so i'd say ibooks.

i can't imagine the mini as a living room hub as some rumors suggest...

Steve will say "One more thing: Intel iBooks for $799 shipping now", and I will buy it online that very minute.

Amen.

I've been hoping that AMD would stick it to Intel by dropping SSE in favor of VMX/AltiVec from IBM. It works out since IBM is licensing Hyper Transport from AMD anyways.

AMD taking AltiVec onboard wouldn't do much for the x86 Macs of the immediate future, since they'll be Intel. But it'd have some far reaching implications and would probably go a long way toward getting AltiVec adopted as the industry standard over SSE.

(Actually, my ideal scenario is for AMD to yank Intel's license for the 64-bit extensions to x86, which AMD holds. And in preparation for Intel yanking SSE in retaliation, AMD would look to IBM for a cross-exchangce of VMX/AltiVec for HyperTransport. It'd benefit IBM and AMD, and it'd leave Intel knee deep in ****. MuHahaha...)

my vote is for the intel ibooks, makes sense to wait on the "pro" type machines since most advanced software doesnt seem like it will be ready by jan.

Richard Garner of Citigroup syas:

We are becoming more convinced that Apple will introduce its first Intel-based PowerBook at Macworld San Francisco," Gardner said in a note to clients. That conference runs from January 9 to 13.
Let's hope ol' Dick is right...

Weren't the Powerbooks jsut updated? I think the Mac mini's need an update first. Those might be the first to get the update to draw more people onto the Mac. Then the other systems would get upgraded.

This is unplausible. Everyone knows that a Steve Jobs figure can say boom, make coughsounds and drink water.

In the "which Mac goes Intel in January" poll, Eug guessed that a 13" widescreen PB would appear. This seems more plausible in light of the fact that the 12" didn't get a significant update (did it get anything bumped?) when the other 2 PBs did. I kinda think it'd be a good idea to temporarily have PBs with both architectures. Different PowerBook buyers might have different motivation to want one or the other, so offering both seems a good short-term interim strategy at the start of the Intel transition..

An intel iBook will kill sales of the PowerBook.

Since the powerbook is a pro machine, and the pro apps aren't ready, then a 13in intel powerbook in addition to the current lineup makes perfect sense. Its a new form factor and the first intel mac so early adopters will love it and the pro's can decide if they want to invest in new technology or buy something that "just works".

I would like to see a PowerMac come out (are they going to change the name?) since I need a new computer for school. I wonder when they will come out.

At least we have confirmation that Steve Jobs will be giving the Keynote.

I don't care since I'm going to finally actually be at the keynote for once (at no cost to myself )!
