You might think this is an excellent place to ask for referrals so you can get your free iPod. It is not. Although sites like freeipods are legit, the majority of our users aren't interested, and threads asking for referrals are generally met with hostility and rudeness. If you start a thread asking for referrals, it'll be locked, your links will be edited out, and you will be banned from the forums. Please keep this in mind and don't waste your time and ours. Thank you.
What's a referral?

Note : This is a purely a question of word-meaning. I have a new video iPod and am not looking at getting one for free, I've just never heard about this referral business. What kind of scam is it? How does it work?

It means making your friend or another person do something.

If you get 10 people to sign up to the scheme then you get an iPod.

Each of those 10 will get an iPod if they in turn each get 10 people to sign up.

Etc etc.

The ads make it profitable for the scheme, I believe. And you probably do get an iPod, but I'd never sign up in a million years.

As ShotgunEd said, the point of these things is that your friends (or anyone else) register for whatever it is here, and when you've made 10 people (for instance) sign up, you get something. In order for the site in question to know that you're the one who made these 10 people sign up, they get a special link from you (or in some other way determined by the site refer to you as the person who made them sign up), and this is the referral (link).

In other words, looking for referrals means looking for people to sign up for stuff to be one of those 10 people you need to get to sign up to said stuff.

Sometimes your grocer makes a referral to the local butcher so that you can get the best cut of meat that you need.

a friend of a friend actually did the freeipod thing where you have a bunch of people sign up, and it worked. He actually got 2 ipods I think because he said UPS never delivered it. But I would never want to hassle with any of that.
