I'm having a tough decision on which to get. I'd love the extra storage of the regular iPod, and video would be nice, although i doubt i'd use it much.
The only thing that keeps me from going for the iPod is that I *really* want to be able to jog with the thing. I've seen a lot of mixed information on both sides, ie "The iPod isn't good for jogging, and jogging with it will break the drive' and I've heard the exact opposite from the other side.
Of course, this isn't a problem for the nano, since it's flash.
I've also heard the nanos scratch BAD really easy, so I don't know...
Do any of you all have any truth on all of this? I'd love to know so I can make a well educated purchase
Thanks

I was thinking the same a while back... eventually went with the 4g nano [white] - it's a lot easier to use down the gym [obviously] and how many songs do you want to listen to or need when you're out for a couple of hours? Even a shuffle will suit your needs well, but a nano is sweet with the colour screen...
As for the scratching I've used mine for just under 2 months with one of those ipod socks... no scratches so far... I think sometimes it simply comes down to how well you care for your gear?
And btw, 1000 songs in your pocket ain't so bad...

I had the same dilemma and went with a 30GB. 4GB is not enough for me and I already have a 5GB mkI iPod that goes everywhere with me so size wasn't a major problem. So that makes the advice 50/50.

i bought the 4gig white nano as it came out and sold my 60gig ipod (not video one). i recently bought a 60gig video ipod since the 4gig on the nano just wasn't enough.
900 or so songs isn't bad, it's a lot, but i'd find myself wanting to hear a certain song sometimes and i'd have to hope it was on the nano, or listen to it when i got home. this isn't what the ipod is about, the ipod is great because you can carry your entire music, video, and photo collection around with you.
i have 26gig free on my 60gig ipod now, and i love it, and i love the free video podcasts.
i was sitting watching an episode of channel frederator yesterday while a friend was trying on dresses. it's neat how it remembers your playback position on video and podcasts.

Video! The only thing the Nano has going for it in this comparison is its miniscule size. I'd probably lose something that small! Plus the Video iPod has more features and of course MUCH more capacity. I'd go video AND with a 60GB model to boot.

I have a 10gig iPod and I'm dying to replace it with a Nano or supplement with a Shuffle. I do jog with it, but I find it bulky for this task. I don't care for having the armband on, so it usually goes into a pocket, which means I have to wear shorts that have deep enough pockets.
I have found that once I go through and rate my music, I only have around 4GB of songs I really want to hear. If you figure 2-3 good songs per 12 song CD (on average), then take your total GB of music and divide by 5 to get how much you need on an iPod (if you're as picky as I am about what's good and what's not).
I could care less about videos or shows to watch on an iPod, so if that matters to you, then your decision is different.

Get the 30gb iPod video and then get an iPod Shuffle for jogging/gym use. That's the solution that works for me. My iPod video stays in the glovebox most of the time, and when I travel I can take it out to watch movies. When I go to the gym, I've got a 1gb Shuffle that I refresh the songs on from time to time. Even a 512mb Shuffle is perfect for the gym, because you're not going to listen to that much music during a workout anyway.

Another vote for the video and shuffle combination. I bought the 60GB video pod and love it. I encoded a number of my favourite movies at a pretty high bitrate (the final result comes in at about 1.2 GB) and use it as a mobile movie player. The quality is a little bit lower than DVD, but a lot better than VHS. As a result I ended up using the video function more than I thought.

Same issue here. I decided for the 30 GB simply due to its capacity. My entire music library in my pocket - that is what I consider more important than the dimensions of my iPod. And the 30 GB 5G is not anything big, just to point that out…

30Gb black vid pod, stupidly though I had it shipped to my parents house because I was expecting it to take a while to ship. But it got their on about 3 days, so now I have to wait 2 weeks before getting my hands on it. And as for the screen scratching, I bought an invisibleshield to protect and not detract from the look.

about the scratching. from day one i kept my original 60gig ipod and this new video one in an ipod sock and both the front and back are scratch free.
it's possible, but it takes work to keep them scratchless.
oh yeah, my 4gig white ipod nano (a little scratched on the back (no small ipod socks )) is for sale in the market place for $150 shipped

My only real concern about the two, is if the regular iPod will be fine with jogging. If so, I'll get it. If not, I'll get the nano.

I've actually thought of getting both . I'd get the nano for at the gym and that sorta thing, and the full blown iPod for times when I want to have tons of storage etc. Though I kind of want a shuffle for a flash drive...

What kind of answer is get both? It's a gift from my parents for Christmas. They're not going to buy me two iPods, nor would I ask or want two.
Anyway, opinions are appreciated.

iPod nano or even the shuffle.
I bought the 4GB black iPod nano the first day it hit the store. Personally, I don't goto the gym or workout, however I think the iPod nano is delicate, so that Nike Sport Armband may be very useful for you.
Anyway, I sold my 4GB iPod nano to my friend and got myself a 60GB iPod 4 weeks ago.
