Sioux Falls, SD - The Zip Feed tower, an abandoned feed mill which is/was the tallest building in South Dakota, was supposed to be demolished yesterday. But they had a little trouble...

http://www.argusleader.com/assets/mov/DF13214123.MOV

Now the building is referred to as the "Leaning Tower of Zip."

D'oh!

This whole thing was THE big event in South Dakota for the season - they raffled the opportunity to push the button and raised money for charity. They sold tickets on tops of every building for miles to watch the demolition. And then it doesn't work. Whoops.

A few rocket launchers at the leaning bottom might do the trick.

Anyways might be a good exercise for the military. Doesn't look like there are too many buildings around.

Man, whoever set that up totally underestimated the construction! Should have had charges half-way up at least.

Well, it's probably not anymore, after the blast shortened it a bit.

Actually, there are quite a few buildings around. You just can't see them from that angle. The Zip Feed mill is right north of downtown.

It's also right south of Falls Park, the town's main tourist attraction, so it wouldn't be a good exercise for the military, I think.

I'll wager that this wasn't the work of Controlled Demolition Incorporated. They would have made sure the destruction of the lower level made the rest of the tower lean far enough over to fall completely-or made it crumble into a neat pile that didn't spill much over the original building footprint.

I have to agree with TETENAL, though. That was the TALLEST building in SD? What, 10 stories?

That's awesome. Now we have a leaning tower in the United States.

It was about 20 stories tall - 2 or 3 of them are in the basement now though.

Wow, a pro North Dakota comment? You rock man!

We have a much taller building in the state capitol... but even so, we don't have very big skyscrapers or anything.

Yay for the Dakotas being in the news.

Man, I leave Sioux Falls and look what happens. That is completely funny, as I have driven by that building quite a few times. But on an up note, the city could start marketing this as a tourist attraction! Come see the Corn Palace, Mont Rushmore, and The Leaning Tower of Zip!

Just my two cents, North Dakota sucks.

I guess I can call this thread home now.

How do I love North Dakota? Let me count the ways in a few pictures:

The state capitol building.

The Medora Musical, nestled in the...

... Badlands, including Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

And don't miss the Ralph Engelstad Arena, one of the premier college hockey arenas.

(hope those pictures are not too big... none of them are mine, either, is that a bad thing to do?)

I get the impression that their rivaly is a lot like the rivalry between the University of Texas and Texas A&M University-with about the same number of people involved and no alumni.

(sorry, I couldn't help it!)

So what are they going to do about the Leaning Tower of Zip?

The funny thing is, the original split between North and South Dakota was due to bickering about where to put the capital. The North Dakotans (all 3 of them ) wanted the capital to be in Bismarck, since it was closer to the geographic center of the territory. The South Dakotans wanted it to be in Yankton, near the southern border of the territory, since the southern part of Dakota had actual, you know, people in it.

Anyway, the split happened, and North Dakota had their capital in Bismarck, whereas South Dakota changed its mind and put the capital in Pierre. Ironically, this means that North Dakota's capital is actually kinda close to the southern part of the state, whereas Pierre is right in the middle of South Dakota geographically. Whatever.

Nah, South Dakota has rivalries with Iowa and Minnesota. North Dakota doesn't exist.

So what are they going to do about the Leaning Tower of Zip?
They're going to hit it over and over with wrecking balls until it eventually falls down.

The UND/NDSU rivalry is getting close to being dead. UND decided to stop playing NDSU after NDSU's move to Division I athletics. UND is interested in talking about it again, but many people at NDSU say UND has had their chance. Soap opera for men, you may say.

NDSU has officially sanctioned a 'rivalry' with SDSU. And it's starting to grow... but officially decreeing one? That seems a little stilted to me...

There were a few reminaing tickets left through ticketmaster as of yesterday. No promises but have at it, as we need that place rockin' to beat those pesky gophers!

Agree with the above. It was a great rivalry! It's sad to see really. Once UND moves to D1(inevitable in my mind) then hopefully they can continue the rivalry.

*Note that it is Division 1-AA.
