Ah I love when a huge corporation who's completely out of touch with todays inner city youth tries to speak to them through clever and "cool" means. They just don't get it, and everyone knows it. I mean who looks at those tags and says "Wow! Sony is so cool! Lets go get us a PSP right now!"
Stick to MTV and stay the hell off of our buildings Sony.

Sony should be sued, sued, sued, sued and sued over again.

No, advertising is not breaking the law by spray painting the sides of buildings that don't allow for advertising. There's a reason why there are designated areas where advertisers can operate.
I'm sure Sony has made it so they are not liable for any of this. If anyone gets in trouble it will probably be the kids who actually did the tagging. Sony probably made them sign something that put all liability on the kids, and not Sony.
Of course, Sony could just be completely stupid and will get busted for this. But I doubt it.

It can't possibly be illegal. You don't do something like this in broad daylight unless you have permission.
Viral marketing, for sure, but not illegal.

it's all about 'mind share'. Who/what is front of mind. If the kids are constantly seeing PSP all around them in many types of media, that is powerful.

Some of you guys should really read the article before posting. Sony paid the owners of the buildings. I think the ads are lame, but they did nothing illegal.

I think you're confused. They paid the artists, but not the building owners. Some of these are even on public buildings, at which point the city was called to paint over them.

I must be blind, because I don't see anything in any of those links that says anything about Sony getting permission from the building owners or spraypainting on public buildings.
Until I read otherwise, I'm assuming Sony got permission to do this. Again, doing this during the day, as one of the picture shows, is an easy way to get arrested.

I think napster did something like this but with posters styled like graffiti. (ironic) I think of graffiti as an art form, a way to exploit the urban decay and infiltrate it with meaningful symbolism. Nothing more perfect to tag than already deteriored buildings and subways. Not all graffiti is "bad." I hate it when something of any authenticity is broken into and raped for the sake of advertising. Advertisers are effectively killing off all forms of teenage expression in order to appeal to them better.

The problem is most graffiti doesn't say anything worthwhile, it just says stupid crap like "MDOG 420 **** THE PD" and various insults between groups of taggers.

I don't have to. I'm sure some of it is worthwhile, but the vast majority of graffiti is not art, it's 'tagging'. There's a big difference between a colorful mural and someone writing profanity in skinny little lines of paint.

Tagging is ugly even when it is good.
Graffiti can be beautiful.

Living in a busy railroad town I see a lot of container cars and other train cars go by with a lot of grafitti on them.
I am not impressed.

I think it was IBM that did this a few years back in san fran, the problem is that the police didn't think it was advertising but vandelism. They had to pay a large fine, clean up their graffitti and apologize - stupid.
I think this is stupid too, but then I'm not the audience sony is trying to reach.

Apologies, the article above didn't mention any payments, that's right. Wired was the magazine talking to the owners of some of the buildings, who all affirmed that payment had been made.
