I'm curious, where would people actually watch videos on their iPod?
When I'm at home or in my college dorm room, I watch videos on my Powerbook or my TV.
You can't watch the video iPod in the car, unlike listening to your iPod in the car.
The only place I can see watching iPod videos is when you travel without your Powerbook. I'd love to watch movies and videos on the iPod while on the train or the airplane. Other than that, what else is a practical situation for using the video features of the iPod?

Public transportation. I sat next to a guy watching (I think) Desperate Housewives on BART yesterday.

I had one of these back in the day:
And I actually used it. The screen is smaller and in black & white, but it was very useful. I got to watch some TV while driving with my parents (I was young back then) and any other place that I was bored and could get good reception.
I would also use the iPod Video on planes, public transportation, and anywhere I was bored. I don't own a laptop so it would be my only way of watching video on the go.

Some people always travel without their PowerBooks — on account of not having one.
It would also be good for goofing off at work.

I've had the occasional video on in my car. The iPod sits high on the dash, and since all I have on there are family guy and south park episodes I've already seen, I don't have to pay much attention to the video itself.
I mostly just listen, glancing down no more frequently than I'd glance down to change songs or radio stations.
I wouldn't want to watch a more realistic show (non-cartoon) or drama while driving though, that would be too involving. The cartoons are nice and simple.
I've also watched episodes on the iPod while camping for seats at Allen Fieldhouse, during my two hour shifts. Helps pass the dead time while sitting uncomfortably on the hard floor.

Sorry man, but I can't help thinking that watching videos while driving should be illegal and probably already is in many places. I know you said you mostly listen, but still - Yikes.

You listen to music on the iPod when you walk, but you don't take a walk watching videos on the iPod. That's why I'm asking, where would you actually use the iPod video?

I understand the concern. I was hesitant to even try it. If at any point I find the video too captivating, I'll have no problem turning it off for a long while.
Not that cell phone use while driving has been found safe, but from my experience, with my viewing habits, I'd say the video in my car is less distracting than talking on my cell phone.

If it's only for traveling then there's really no *compelling* reason to buy one, correct?

Well not that I can think of for my life. I'm sure there are some professions out there that would benefit from a video iPod. And lets not forget about Portable Pr0n! Pr0n at work, pr0n at the grocery store, pr0n in church, pr0n while waiting at the doctor's office, etc. I mean how much more compelling can ya get?

Ive already got a demo reel of my projects made up and ready to put on my vid pod when I get it. A friend of mine did the same and hes gotten several jobs thanks to having his reel available to show employers when hes on a shoot.

Wouldn't listening to the iPod be illegal while driving (in some places)? With music playing on the car speakers you can hopefully still hear any sirens, but with headphones in the chance of this is lower. Unless you meant playing the iPod through the car speakers.

I would use it....
On my 45 minute train ride twice a week. (both ways)
On my hour long bus ride once a week. (Both ways)
On the often 2 hour bus or train ride to the nearest bigger city, Hiroshima.
On the 12 hour plane ride back to the US I`m taking over xmas.
At work, if I could get away with it. I`m still trying to find a good reason.

I can think of many instances when to use it:
• When your at a boring movie with your girl (or guy) - bust out the iPod
• During Sunday morning Church - bust out the iPod
• Fishing - bust out the iPod
• Waiting in Dr. Office - bust out the iPod
• Waiting at the DMV - bust out the iPod
• Bad sex - bust out the iPod

I asked a cop about that once, and he said it was circumstantial. He said that sound systems these days are so loud anyways that many times earphones are quieter than speakers. But I am sure, like you stated, is depends on where you are.

I believe driving with headphones is illegal in most places. Right now in Illinois, watching "TV" while in the car is illegal. However current law does not apply to other video devices, such as DVDs, iPods, etc. This all changes January 1st, when having any video viewable from the driver's seat will be illegal.

The iPod video should be a big thing on countries other than the U.S.
In this country, only the least affluent 10% (my guess) rides the bus regularly.
This is why Apple should work toward getting iTMS videos working in other countries.
In Mexico D.F., 90% (my guess too) rides the bus every day for 1 hour average. Imagine them with vPods watching their favorite Televisa shows and Menudo videos.
