So, I'm really pissed off. I am posting this after drinking a bottle of wine with a girlfrient at a local restaurant with some people I work with from time to time. (Local newspaper.)
I have a job that entails dealing with some very high-profile execs with news media organizations.
Well, tonight I was out having dinner with friends (work related in Miami) and I came home after having had some wine. I'm feeling good, but I'm not drunk.
Anyway, an exec from a "large" media news organization called me from Atlanta about something work-related just as I was pulling up in my driveway. I was having a conversation with him and tried to go into my home. The exterior door was locked - chained - from the inside. I was fiddling with it and trying to manipulate the phone, carry on an articulate conversation, and open the door all at the same time. I couldn't get the freaking door open.
Along comes my spouse and sees me trying to get the door open.
He comes up to the door to open it and says, "Gosh, you can't get the door open? Are you drunk? You're drunk aren't you?"
Well, I don't think I WAS drunk, but now I feel like getting drunk.
He said that in front of someone whom I hold in very high esteem, someone who slings work my way from time to time, a former employer.
I WAS MORTIFIED.
This person overhead him say this and say, "Oh, maybe I need to let you go then. Now is obviously not a good time. Be careful and have a nice night."
I am really angry right now and I let my spouse know it.
Okay, so am I being irrationally upset about this? I want to know if I am? Or do I have a right to be upset? I think this is about the only time I've ever been really pissed off at him in our entire marriage.
I'm embarrassed and I think he cost me some money in a research/writing contract and it really has me angry.
Thanks for listening.

If you were visibly drunk (which you may need to assess in the morning) I would be bloody pissed that you rolled home in you vehicle (especially an SUV death mobile... j/k) and probably do the same thing, unfortunately it was overhead and for that I hope he feels sorry.

I would said your pissed, laughed, then helped you with the door. So I'm just as bad

I wasn't drunk. I had two glasses of wine. That doesn't make me drunk. He made his comment and thought that he was being clever, amusing, funny.
I asked him, "Why make that comment to me while I'm ON THE TELEPHONE?" He said, "I thought you were talking to a girlfriend."
Well, I wasn't, obviously.
Here's the thing: I get a lot of phone calls from people during the day. I have an office at home and I work from home for the most part. I have (nicely) asked all the mature members of my family, spouse included, to NOT talk to me, interrupt me, act inappropriately, when I am on the telephone...PLEASE.
They continue to do it. They continue to interject themselves into conversations, talk to me, interrupt my telephone conversation, etc. It doesn't matter that I'm on the telephone. My telephone is my office, per se. I've asked them SO many times, "If I'm on the telephone PLEASE don't interrupt my conversation in ANY way." They still do it.
I love them but tonight I'm mortified.

I wasn't drunk.
Since when is two glasses of wine "drunk."
???
Well, now I'm drunk, yeah!
(I'm finishing a bottle of Riesling by myself. )
But, that's not the point.
The point is making INAPPROPRIATE COMMENTS at an inappropriate time.
I'll get over it. My husband is great. I'm just angry.

It depends how often you drink, for me 2 glass of wine and I would be drunk and would not drive, I drink roughly every few months though.
According to the center for disease control (alcoholism is a disease): Heavy drinking is consuming alcohol in excess of 1 drink per day on average for women and greater than 2 drinks per day on average for men
2 Glasses of wine can be equivalent to four 12 oz. beers.
Of course it also maters how quickly they were consumed, do you think you would pass a breathalyzer? haha

Cody, that's an incredibly irrational reason to be mad. I would suggest calling up the person you were talking to before, and say hey sorry about the other night, and yah it was a bit of a bad time, I bet it even sounded worse than it was over the phone, anyway did you have some work you wanted me to do?
If they sound concerned, explain that it was a misunderstanding. But being pissed off about it won't solve anything. That said, your hubby is a guy, the fact that you've been married so long and this is the first time he said something half stupid that got you in trouble is a freaking miracle count your blessings and be happy .

How about instead of being pissed off that people don't respect what you perceive as this floating virtual office that encases you if you're on the phone, you take another look at your own behavior.
Personally I think it's rude, inconsiderate and unrealistic to set these restrictions on your family. If you have a phone call that is that important (like the one you took when you were drunk ) then it falls on YOU, not your family, to make sure you seclude yourself from outside distractions. Go in another room, go in the basement, go into a closet, stay in the car, etc.

Your husband obviously didn't know with whom you were speaking with when he jokingly said this. But how do you react? By acting like a typical woman. Like an irrational idiot. All women behave like you. Every single one that I've met personally in my life--including my mother, whom I love very, very, much and I would never say this to her face, but I could give a damn about you-- behave like little girls. Why the hell are women allowed to get away with this crap. You're the person at fault here, not your husband who was helping you out with the lock and greeting you at the door.
Take some freakin' responsibility here.
I'm sick of the way women treat men. Switch sides with us, not a pretty picture is it.

I don't think you're being entirely irrational. I would have been mortified too. But you know what? - Your client probably only ever sees you being professional, now he's seen that you're a real person, who knows how to have fun and still get the job done... He probably admires you more knowing you're not a workaholic robot.
Interrupting people having a conversation, on the phone or otherwise, is ill-mannered. I'm sure your partner knows this and is beating himself up over it. He hadn't shared a few beers with boys by any chance? He should've kept communication to a cheeky grin and a slap on the arse after he'd opened the door for you.

WTF?!? That is the most self-centered, egoistic thing I've read in a long time.
Is it somehow not considered rude to interrupt other people's conversations in the US? To interrupt people when they are on the phone?
Perhaps this is just a case of cultural difference, but anyone with any kind of normal upbringing or manners would never just talk to people who are on the phone. If you have something important you need to say right now, you insert a quiet “I need to say something to you”, and wait for the people on the phone to ask whomever is on the other end to hang on a second, someone needs to tell them something. If what you have to say isn't important (such as this joke-thing by Cody's husband), you don't say anything, and you wait until they're off the phone.

See, Oisin has the right idea: Wait until people are not talking into a phone to make jokes or talk to them.
This has been a sore spot in my household for a while.
I gave up an office and work from home so that I can work and take care of children also. I work, no joke, probably 60 hours a week. If I had an office there would be no interruptions and I might be more productive. But, I work from home and I do what I can to get by and I have repeatedly asked the members of my family to refrain from talking to me when I'm on the telephone because a lot of the time I'm on the phone with a client.
I would never, ever, walk up to my husband and blurt out, "Ha ha ha! You're drunk aren't you? You're drunk! Ha ha ha!" N-E-V-E-R.
Why?
Because what if he was on the phone with the CEO of his company? As is sometimes the case? I would never put him in that position.
Now, on the other hand, calling me at 9:00 at night is a little late so he can be forgiven for thinking that I might be on the phone with a girlfriend.
AKCrab, yes, they're king crab. They're HUGE. I think I've had them twice. You're right though...they're hard to get down here. Snow crab is good, but doesn't compare. I'm always fascinated with king crab fisherman. I watch the show on Discovery Channel about them fishing for them up there. SCARY!

Yeah Bekah always tries to talk to me while I am on the phone all the time. Nevermind the fact she knows I can only hear out of one ear.
I always thought it was an unwritten rule, if you are on the phone, unless someone is dying, or an emergency, wait till they get off the phone to talk to them.
It's like interrupting someone in the middle of speaking.

Anyway, I went on a rant last night and now it's over. I doubt that they'll interrupt me again:

You don't know that I was drunk. You're an ass to ASSume that.
I wasn't drunk. I had two glasses of wine over 4 HOURS. How does that make me drunk?
I called my husband during dinner and said, "I'll be home later because we're having a good time." He made the joke, "Just don't get drunk and go home with some strange man you pick up at the bar." That was amusing, actually. When he met me at the door he was trying to make another joke - furthering the first one - only it wasn't funny because of the person on the other end of the phone. (Who by the way, sent me flowers this morning for working my ass off to get a job done for them - a job someone else turned down because of the holidays.)
Screw you, anyway. Why don't you go flick a cigarette on someone who tosses it out of their car or yell at someone for not using their turn signals? Or get arrested AGAIN for interfering with the cops doing their jobs?

Tell me, Kevin: If you drink two glasses of wine over four hours are YOU drunk?
I guess that's the equivalent of two beers?
I'm not sure. All I know is that I wasn't drunk. Not until I came home and got upset. Then I opened a bottle of Riesling and drank another 2 glasses of wine. Then I fell asleep. Got up at 4:00 AM to start working (trying to finish a big job today) on the rest of this project.

Me? No, And I only weigh 155lbs. And rarely drink.

Depending on the wine. Some wine has little alchohol. Most decent wines have 12% or so.
Twice that of most beers. But also, a glass of wine has less wine in it than a mug or bottle of beer. So they probably equal out

No. But I can tell you what the supposed violation was "Resist/Obstructing an Officer", which is referring to me not knowing what the hell was going on when they jumped me, then accused me of taking pictures fo minors to which I denied and told the truth, which they ignored, then cuffed me, threw me in a jail til 3 am, then acknowledged that I had been telling the truth and that all my pictures were fine and dandy and gave me my camera back with all my pictures on it.

I'm so sorry Cody. I'm here if you want to talk.
Happy to hear that you are being productive this morning.
