Check out the Quik House, which is made out of recycled shipping containers. Similar theme -reusing one type of space for something very different- but probably a bit more practical.

When I lived in FL one of the guys I worked with had turned his huge storage unit into an apartment. He added a loft, wired in some 220 for his garage equipment, couches, bed, appliances, you name it.

He is still my hero to this day....
Please keep in mind the ambiguously selective general understandings we've all agreed upon...

There's an airfield in WI that's right near a community.... tons of people have 'hanger houses'.

There are many similar communities in Florida. My grandparents live near one. What they think of as a 'hangar house' is a little different than what the OP describes, though: the house isn't actually made from a hangar. It just has a small hangar attached to it, much like a garage.

My grandparents don't have a plane, nor do they have a hangar house, but they have a lot of fun going to the airstrip and watching the people who do have them.

I would love this. There is one warehouse in downtown Albuquerque that I would love to build a loft for the house part and then have downstairs for all the wood working and car stuff. Price being the same I would take this approach over some fancy house.

The hanger house looks quite nice to me. Would make for a great conversation piece. Solid and sturdy construction.

Better than trying to use a house as an aircraft hangar.
