Their new Japanese MP3 player looks just like the iPod (including the interface), except that the controls are uglier. Link

Creative's players have always had the same interface as the iPod.
And it looks more like a cross between Creative's recent Zen lines and the iPod than "just like an iPod."

So no, no actual Japanese words, then. Don't they use non-loan words for any of these things, or is it just more cool to borrow the English words?

The button at lower right is probably "Enter" - while the one at lower left is probably the equivalent of the iPod's "menu" button.

Posers like to use English words a lot, though some turn into genuine Japanese words, like "rajio". However, the iPod's Japanese interface uses a lot more actual Japanese words, such as 写真 (shashin) instead of "photo" rendered in kana. Creative isn't Japanese, so who knows if they actually hired competent translators or not (I doubt it, since there doesn't seem to be much translating going on).
Actual Japanese people tend to be invent more interesting and uniquely Japanese tech terms. One popular one right now is sha-me (写メ), a contraction of shashin-emeeru which refers to picture sent from your cell phone.

The latter.
Though only "Foto", Music, and System (Settings) could easily be replaced by Japanese words; only the latter two are in Kanji on the iPod.

Looking at it again, it looks like the lower right is "enter" and the top left is "menu."

Isn't Creative the company that has the patent for the interface anyway? I thought Apple was the one copying.

True, but Creative's, and by by extension, Dell's, player's also have a "top menu" button.
Which is labeled as "menu" on Creative's player's with text labels.

"Creative has been employing the interface since September 2000, when the Nomad Jukebox first appeared. Apple's iPod debuted in October 2001, with Apple filing its patent application with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in October 2002."
So much for the lawsuit.

Not the same interface we are talking about SWF. You are throwing stones at a fire.
Apple does indeed have protection on the iPod's look and feel.

OMG THEY COPIED WHITE ALSO! Apple invented white!
So not only did they not file the iPod interface until 6 months after it was released... someone from MS filed the patent first AND Creative has been using a similar interface since before the iPod.
Some of you need to get out of fanboy mode.

Yes it is. They changed the typeface, but this is still the same user interface Creative has been using for years.
And again, it doesn't look as much like an iPod as you guys claim.
If it did, Apple would have sued Creative last year over the Zen Touch.

It's interesting how Apple seems to be the only company to make white devices that do not look "toyish."
I think Creative should stick to the brushed metal copy.

Exactly. I remember when the iPod first came out I thought it was a copy of an MP3 player I had used a year ago.
Some people are in major Apple fanboy mode. If anything Apple is liable. Just because Apples is more popular doesn't mean they own it.

Has nothing to do with it being white SWF. You are just wrong.

Similar interface? not really. Until now.
And the fanboy comment, this coming from the biggest Xbox fanboy in here.

The image you posted is not the same as the image above. Which does indeed ripoff the iPod Look at the GUI. From the highlight to the battery , to the menubar, to the way the photos are shown.

It has nothing to do with being a fanboy, I used to get flamed in here for saying bad things about Apple all the time.
The Look of that GUI is a RIPOFF of the iPod's. Plain and simple.

As mentioned already, Creative created this GUI and Apple ripped it off.
Moving the battery icon to the other side and adding arrows doesn't make Apple an innovator.

No, the GUI such that Creative created already existed. Apple didn't rip them off. Ever use a Newton? (Worked the same)

Um, I am not talking about the placement. I am talking about THE LOOK. They INDEED ripped off the look of the iPod. From the bevels, to the colors. To the way the pictures are displayed.
How come you didn't actually respond to any points I made about the look of it? You know, what Creative ripped off?

It's a pretty, colorized version of the interface Creative started using five years ago and Apple started using four years ago (in music players). Apple doesn't have sole rights to a brightly colored, slightly 3D-looking appearance with a battery icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
And various portable media center devices displayed photos "the iPod way" before the iPod Photo was announced.

Yes, in music players. A interface Creative didn't invent, or come up with. So Apple couldn't have stolen something from someone that never inveted said thing.

Of course not. But I wouldn't be making fun of them if it was just the battery icon. But it's THE WHOLE GUI! Why are you trying to belittle the copying as much as you can BOP?
And various portable media center devices displayed photos "the iPod way" before the iPod Photo was announced.
Just like various portable devices Apple has made that predate Creative's mp3 players displayed information the way Creative does.
So to say Apple copied off them is hilarious.
But to say Creative ripped off their look and feel (Not just the colors) isn't a far stretch.
Try again.

Note that I updated my post.
The entire interface is just a prettier version of what's been around for years. You can't patent pretty.
But frankly, if this were lawsuit worthy, it would have happened years ago.
And I wasn't aware the Newton did this first. The product line is dead for good reason: it didn't sell. (Well, that and Steve hates everything Sculley was responsible for.)
