Okay, so we finished studying the San Vitale cathedral in Ravenna, Italy. Here is the image in question (I will post more if I find them):

Notice the "Z" between Jesus's legs. WHAT IS THAT FOR?! My professor didn't even know. I know who's around him, so I don't need that information. Just why the Z is there. Note, this isn't homework... I don't ACTUALLY need to do this, I'd just like to one up my teach.

hmmmmm...

just tell him that is the greek alpha reference to the number six. the significance of six being the number of man (i.e. the sixth day), and the role of christ was to bring man into heaven - which is apparently what is happening with the gentlemen on the outer left and right. ;-)

be well.

1. Religious topics go in the PL, as clearly indicated in the forum listing.
2. Check the image size rules and DON'T POST OVERSIZE IMAGES.

I just emailed my Christian Art-History professor, so I would think I'll have an answer for you later today.

A couple of initial ideas are that it is some Greek or Hebrew word for the risen Christ. It also looks like it could be some sort of decoration (similar to the one on the robe on the man at his right hand).

You remind me my wife… why you laugh? She dead. | sasper at gmail dot com
