I am currently drink a new favorite beer. It is not my absolute favorite, but it is in the top ten. Duvel is my top favorite.

Bell's Winter White Ale

It's a very heavy wheat with a light floral hops finish. Perfect for these Winter days.

Enjoy.

I enjoyed a couple "Samuel Smith's Winter Welcome" last night.

Never had a Bell's Winter White, I'll put it on my list.

I like white ales too. I've had the Bells Winter White Ale, however Allagash's White Ale is better. Hoegaarden and Delirium Tremens are good too.

I'll have to try it out when I'm home from school for the holidays.

My favorite "summer" beer is Bell's Oberon, with an orange slice. It's the one thing that makes me look forward to the summer.

anything bells is amazing. i dont think ive actually tried the winter white ale. i drank so much oberon this summer...WOOT! it was a good summer hold the fruit, please. steve, are you from michigan?

samuel smiths is really good. i dont see many places that have it around here, but ive enjoyed it the few times ive found it. they have some kind of christmas beer or something (if i remember correctly) that was really good.

railroader, im kind of surprised for some reason to see you say duvel is your favorite. i enjoy it, but its not my favorite. i really like a more carmel colored ale, a nice IPA, or an imperial stout. also, i finally found a place that had a dragonmead brew on tap (ya, i know, its made like 30 minutes from my house). i think it was a honey porter. it was divine.

I went to school in Kalamazoo and "visited" the old Bell's brewery just about every other day. Now there's a brewery across the street from the old Bell's brewery called Kraftbrau that I like better. But I can't find their beers anywhere other than at the brewery or a few bars around Kalamazoo.

Bell's went through a stout faze a couple years ago and tried brewing about 20 different variations of the style. I only liked two of them. And I like stouts.

Currently this season they seem to be on a wheat kick and I could not say I could be any happier.

Unless, they tried to do a Belgian style trend, but then I am afraid they'd screw it up and I'd be bitter [pun] toward Bells.

Oberon [I started drinking it when it was called SolSun but they had to change the name] I a wheat beer and traditionally, wheat beers are served with a slice of lemon. I don't know where this recent trend of serving Oberon with a orange slice started other than maybe a frugal tavern owner started it as oranges are cheaper then lemons, or Bell's suggested it as a new trend and to do a little play on the tradition. All I can say is "No Sir, I Don't Like It.". I always ask for a lemon slice instead of an orange slice if they insist on putting fruit in it.

I am not a huge fan of Samuel Smiths beers. I've often found them to be "thin". As the old saying goes, it's probably better in it's country of origin.

Duvel is beer in it's "purest" form. The highest quality malted barley lightly roasted to a very pale color, a strain of hops I find that has perfect bitter level and aroma characteristics, and a yeast strain that is completely unique with a very "Belgian feel" to it. Nirvana.

I have found with Dragonmead that it is hit or miss. There's a bar I go to often in Bay City, MI that has Dragonmead brews on tap and so far my favorite has been "Final Absolution" and their hemp beer.

nredman: none of those are bad, but none of them are spectacular. Expand you horizons, I bet you'll find beers you're crazy about. You probably won't be able to get them at most bars, though, like you can those three.

Had some of this last night:

(Red Seal Ale)

Very decent, especially if you don't like sweet beers.

I like sweet beers, too, and Duvel's high on the list.

Sam Smith's oatmeal stout deserves its rep, but the others I find are nothing special.

I also like Fuller's Porter and Mackeson's XXX Stout...if there are better dark beers out there, let me know.

For Oktober and winter, I like Spaten and Franziskaner Hefeweizen, the latter of which I'd recommend over the wheat beers already mentioned in this thread.

there are a couple places around me with a ridiculous amount of beers on tap and in bottle. one place in ann arbor MI has 65 some beers on tap. a place in berkeley MI has 40. my general advice is to just go sit for a spell, ask for a taste, and get some beer exposure. usually in a place like that, they dont stock shitty beers as the owners are connoisseurs to some extent as well.

and the cool thing is, american beers are really good. there are microbreweries all over the US pumping out high quality delicious stuff. its something even I can get all nationalist about (with my VW in the driveway and honda in the garage, haha)

buy american!

Exactly. Our Budweisers and Busch and such beers are made for alcoholic swillers, and college kids on binges.

Very little taste, you can drink alot without getting weighed down too much etc.

But for people who LIKE beer say with a meal this stuff is aweful.

Import or micro for me when I am in the mood to drink a beer.

OK, here's where the holes in my beer knowledge show up -- what exactly is in a beer like Killian's that's different than other beers?

If I have more than one Killians, I start to feel sick. And I don't mean drunk, I mean that there's something in the beer that doesn't agree with me.... Any clue what that might be?

But I'm going to have to look for this Bell's stuff now... I like an adventure that ends with good beer!

Chimay, is in my top ten.

Orval, is in the top twenty.

You might have a hard time finding Bell's. It's made in Michigan and is a not a large brewer. They don't pasturize and therefore it doesn't ship very well. But good luck on your hunting. It's game worth putting down.

Yes. I grew up in the Grand Rapids area and I currently attend school in Indiana. Maybe some of us Michiganders should get together for beer or two.

Killians tries passing itself off as an irish import... so they can charge more. It's a glorified PBR.

They now serve that on tap at the new MIS Club that opened up last year. I upgraded my seats to there and found that on tap, for only $4, I was in heaven. When finding a local on tap, I always drink that...and for the weekend in June (i didn't make it back in august) it was the same price as domestics. What a great race weekend that was.

I'm sure this year Bells will be more than the bud/miller crap

as far as i know, the only iodine used in brewing is found in iodaphor used to sanitize parts (clamps, T's valves carb stones and such), Killians might have a different recipe that calls for it, not sure.

The levels that are being used to sanitize are low enough that it kills bacteria but not yeast cells. around 25 PPM, and its not straight iodine. So if they use it to sanitize i don't think it would be the iodine that would be making him sick, unless he is really really sensitive,

still i am not sure how killians is different from the brews we do.

Not if you don't know any better. When I first tried Killians, I thought "Hey! A beer with a flavor to it!" Now that I know a lot better I don't bother with it, but it's a good tool to find out if someone really likes beer or just uses it as a vehicle to consume alcohol. Sadly, most "beer drinkers" are more "beer users." No appreciation for quality, no intention to find out what real beer tastes like, even with the limitations placed on American beer (or beer imported to America).

ya. i suppose we can call it a "gateway beer". i think i might have ordered one once when i was in a dreadful bar that only carried macrobrews. "ya, we got both kinds of beer. bud and bud light!"

oh, and the other thing that happened to me. me and some friends went into this cowboy bar for a laugh one night, and obviously we stuck out like one legged men in a tap dance contest. i saddle up to the bar and (after a slight wince at the options available on tap) asked the bartender what they had in bottles. she quickly blurted out "we dont have any of those fancy beers"

but ya. killians. its alright. i guess. id probably just order a water had i no other options next time. or just get the damned PBR. thats at least got some history. hahah.
