Because forums have hierarchies, with post count being the primary indicator of primacy. However, there comes a point when a person has too many posts, and people start to mock them for not having a life. Thus, the name change becomes essential.

rickey939 was never available because somebody else had it and never posted...D'hood deleted the account finally and then I was able to grab it for myself.
Essentially, gorickey and ManOfSteal never would have existed if rickey939 was available from the very beginning. There again, all this drama wouldn't have unfolded either.
