So now it's down to Apple, Yahoo!, and Google. Konfabulator got big news after complainging about Apple rehashing an old idea from NeXT. Google, of course, does everything Yahoo does (and vice versa.) When Vista comes out we'll also have "Gadgets," Microsoft's genius marketing team hard at work.

So now we'll have Apple, Yahoo!, Google, and Microsoft all fighting for Widgets.

I'm wondering if it'll just come down to Apple and Microsoft because once Vista is released, will anyone bother with Yahoo! or Google if they just port their Widgets to Gadgets? And of course, Apple already has Dashboard.

I also wonder if all the APIs will eventually be universal, or if they'll keep them all separate? It'd be kinda funny to see an OS X dekstop with all three Widget programs running simultaneously. Dashboard, Yahoo!, and Google.

My concern is that Widgets will just become desktop advertisement, with forced ads popping up outta nowhere.

Well, with Yahoo and Google widgets/gadgets/whatever, yes.

But not with Dashboard and/or Vista's gadgets.

It will sure add lots of crap to the pool of widgets. There are only so few that are actually useful…

Google's 'widgets' are not like Dashboard or Konfabulator (now Yahoo) widgets. All they did is allow third party developers to create 'widgets' (I think 'modules' is a better term) for the Google "personalized homepage" which has existed for some time now.

That's not widgets in the same sense as Dashboard and Konfabulator widgets are.

Oh, oops. I thought Google made something like Konfabulator as well. OK, so it's down to Apple, Yahoo!, and Microsoft.

Yeah, it's all done in a browser rather than the desktop.

Doesn't Dashboard use no memory if you haven't any widgets running?

If you never activate Dashboard, it doesn't load into memory.

If you are so concerned about memory use, why the hell would you want to run Konfabulator?

I think Athens enjoys confounding the forums with odd, nonsensical comments.

There already is so much crap in the Widget Pool that it's pretty much a Widget Septic Tank. I can count the widgets I use on 1 hand.

I wish there was a widget that removed all the spurious crapola from topics before I read them.

And that includes this post.

That doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Konfabulator is the memory hog, not dashboard.
