If your computer is under a year old, and you bring it to apple for service, what do you need to present to them?

Is your serial number on the computer enough?

The only "receipt" I have is from an e-mail they sent me confirming my order. Do I need this?

I'm asking because I sold my computer and I'm wondering what the new owner needs to present to get service. Do most places just use the serial number as proof?

And can't you buy applecare?

They have a serial number database. You can buy applecare, but mostly it's just money out of
your pocket as most electronics fail within the first 30 days of use and the standard warranty is for 365 days.

So you don't need a receipt.

Why not call a apple store and ask? I was lucky my iMac came with its orginal receipt, but I never had to ever take it in before the warranty expried.

If I remember correctly, both times I have sent laptops into AppleCare, they have not asked for any sort of proof of purchase.

I took my G5 into the store once for a repair, and as I recall, they did ask to see "proof of purchase date" for the machine.

The store needs to see a proof of purchase date.

Apple keeps a record of serial numbers online, but the "expected sales dates" can be off by weeks if the machine sat around in the store before bought, which can easily affect a valid warranty claim.

It varies from store to store. I have not had an Apple Store service anything for me, so I don't know how they operate in that regard. I do know my local authorized service retailer does not require proof of purchase.

It's a good thing that we have bar codes it saves a lot of time.

If you take it in to the store it was bought at, then yes, it shouldn't be a problem tracing the purchase date by serial number.

If you bring it in anywhere else, you'll have a problem without proof of purchase (unless the model was only released within the last year, of course. All 5G and nano iPods are obviously currently under warranty, no questions asked.).

If you registered your machine shortly after buying it, they may not ask for anything. But bring it just in case.
