Remember that story about 50 Cent performing at some little girl's bat mitzvah? Yeah, you wish it didn't really happen. Nothing says hardcore gangster rapper like a teenie-bop white girl dancing to your music with two hundred of her closest white teenie-bop friends.
More pictures from the $500,000 bat mitzvah after the jump.
http://www.nydailynews.com/front/sto...p-314735c.html
The party cost an estimated $10 million, including the price of corporate jets to ferry the performers to and from. Also on the bill were The Eagles' Don Henley and Joe Walsh performing with Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks; DJ AM (Nicole Richie's fiance); rap diva Ciara and, sadly perhaps (except that he received an estimated $250,000 for the job), Kenny G blowing on his soprano sax as more than 300 guests strolled and chatted into their pre-dinner cocktails.
"Hey, that guy looks like Kenny G," a disbelieving grownup was overheard remarking - though the 150 kids in attendance seemed more impressed by their $1,000 gift bags, complete with digital cameras and the latest video iPod.

Ok, a Bar/Bat Mitzva should be a time for celebration... but not a time to advertize to the world at large how rich and foolish one is. It is a ceremony that changes the status of the child to being an adult under Halacha (Jewish Law) and as such is considered a joyous event, but not a reason for ostentatious crap.

I don't understand what the big deal is. He's an artist who got paid for performing, that's all.
500.000 bucks for playing a couple of songs ain't bad...and I don't even want to know what went on back stage.

Affluent American Jews in particular have been having ridiculously lavish bar mitzvah parties for decades. The luxurious hedonism that exemplifies those events is inimical to the meaning and intent of the ceremony, which is the acceptance of one's full religious obligations under Torah. Yet, for so many secular Jews the bar/bat mitzvah marks their departure from organized religion, a point at which they can forgo any additional religious training and declare themselves done with the formal aspect of their spiritual lives. Conservative and Reform Jews who participate in these hollow intimations of hallowed rites should do their nominal faith a favor by eschewing them altogether. Just call them birthday parties and be done with it.

You're kidding right?
It's great money, to be sure. But why stop there, why not a Mcdonalds commercial, Gap, Revlon nail polish etc. Thugg gangster rappers don't do these kinds of things right? And they especially don't do little kids parties. You lose street cred—I'm sure this has already affected him by now.
He's rockin' the the platinum cross. That's the first thing I noticed. But why would jews have a problem with it.

It's a religion not a race. I'm sure some will disagree but I'm not looking for an argument. The groups they mixed with were mostly white European. I think that makes them white, no?

Admittedly, some of us [i.e. Conservative and Reform Jews] didn't go this route... yes, there was a party - far, far more money was spent on getting good food than entertainment. Some of us felt that out Bar Mitzvah was much more of a religous event than an excuse for a party - bloody hell, I have friends who to this day (now 7 years later) that are deeply embarressed by the parties that were thrown for them.
My thought is that from the B'nai Mitzvot that I've seen, a party of sorts will happen - but what it should be is a way to bring the family together for a good meal or similar. So take your DJ, your pile of insane party favors (the articles of clothing that say "I did X/was Xed at Shlomo's Bar Mitzvah"), cram them up your anal oriface and set them ablaze! I'm there to hear the to-be adult chant Torah and comment thereon - not to see mommy and daddy waste $N000 on the latest fad.
For the record, I've been a Reform Jew all my life and now lead a Minyan at Boston University Hillel.
That is not to say I agree with the Movement (the Union for Reform Judaism) on everything - just that is where I fit.
And this last bit goes to small change: get a life. Yes, it is good money - but turn it DOWN next time in the interests of taste. Or at least ditch the Christian iconography.

I was having a discussion with my mom today about how the upcoming (3-4 years away) Bat Mitzvah (and party) of a cousin of mine is going to be horribly lavish and I'm going to hate it. If it is anything like the above, I'll be walking out...That said, the last Bat Mitzvah I was at was held in an Orthodox shul, and the party was pretty lavish.
*sigh* At least not everyone is like that.

Yea exactly. That's how they make a living. They are "entertainers" and they entertain people for money. What's wrong with that?

LOL, you actually buy into that "street credibility" crap. That's all just part of the image these guys sell to their mostly white "suburban" audience.
They have as much real "street cred" as Barbara Streisand or Céline Dion.

Heh. They paid that guy 500.000 to perform at a bat mizvah - do you honestly believe they care what he wears?

Any religious ritual event can be used as a way to flaunt wealth and lavishness. A typical debutante party can become nothing but lavishness. These kids may be considered adults by law but socially-wise they may still be nothing but immature spoiled children. Regardless of their achievements and academics.
As a hispanic raised catholic, there are many over the top quinceañeras families give to there girls. Some of these families can't even afford to have parties like this in the first place.
I don't even think these rituals have anything to do with religion, rather it is more of a cultural thing, even though many families have a mass for the celebration.
So yeah, religious and cultural events are just a way for families to throw their money around (or borrowed money).
Any Catholics here ever heard of, or attended a First Communion party that was heavily lavished and luxurious? Or a Baptism? Confirmation? Talk about spoiling children and babies.
