Baby-sitter charged over drunken toddler
Items compiled from Tribune news services
Published December 29, 2005
PATCHOGUE, NEW YORK -- A 37-year-old man was arraigned Wednesday on child-endangerment charges after one of two toddlers he was baby-sitting was found drunk, authorities said.
Suffolk County sheriff's deputies investigating a family court case peered through the window of a Patchogue home Tuesday and said they saw Juan Reyes passed out with the children wandering around.
They roused Reyes, who was the only adult at home with the two toddlers, ages 2 and 3, according to the sheriff's office. The deputies said Reyes appeared intoxicated.
The deputies also said the 2-year-old was having difficulty standing, had bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol. Tests at a hospital found he was legally drunk.
At the time of incident, the children's parents were at a hospital, where the mother was giving birth.
Reyes pleaded not guilty.

Not defending this idiot at all, but I still have grandmas and grandpas who come into the office all the time who remember (many years ago) using a little whiskey or bourbon to help put their kids to sleep. They of course don't advocate it now.

What about the guy in Pakistan who slit the throat of his 3 "dishonored" children so they'd never have the chance to become adulterers. Now that is just disgusting. Makes me lose any faint glimmer of hope I once had in humanity. I don't condone drunken children, but at least they're still alive, with maybe a slight hangover.

No, there are lots of things wrong with this world. Sick people are just one part of it.
The drunken toddler incident doesn't even come close to the incident in Pakistan. That is something that's almost beyond comprehension. What makes that whole thing even sicker is that Pakistan won't punish him, and even if they do it will be very light. He will go on with his life as if nothing happened.
Sometimes I think its better to bury my head and ignore all the disgusting things that go on in the world. Ignorance surely is bliss. Its only when I pay attention that I get depressed and feel hopelessness.

What do you mean when you say "the world"? Do you mean the planet? Or the people on it? Because obviously the planet doesn't do these things. The people are what makes the bad things of this world. There are some truly sick people in this world that contribute to that. Then there are the people who aren't sick, but choose to contribute to the crappiness in their own special way.
To say there is nothing wrong with this world is just plain wrong, I'm sorry.

My mom did that for us as kids when we had a bad cough and couldn't get to sleep.
But never to just get us to go to sleep. Usually it was a couple sips of port or sherry.
Which, if you think about it, isn't that much different form the alcohol-laden cough
medicines of years past. (I was born in 1970 if that give you a good time reference.)

One should never stop striving for clarity of thought and precision of expression.
I would prefer my humanity sullied with the tarnish of science rather than the gloss of religion.
