I do not use shampoo because it contains chemicals which I believe will damage my hair. So I wash my hair with only water. Anybody else do the same?

You hair contains oils that rinsing with just water will not remove. I think not cleaning your hair will do more damage and to be honest look pretty gross.

Why not investigate an organic or natural solution. What's the next step not washing because some soaps contains chemicals.

True shampoo has chemicals, but what proof do you have that its harmful. I see people who have good personal hygiene have nice hair, conversely those who don't are, well, grubby looking.

Good luck on your personal journal, what does your wife/significant other say about that?

Actually, if we're being all scientific and serious about it, there's evidence that after about two weeks of not washing your hair it balances itself out and becomes self-cleaning. You'll look like a tramp for two weeks while you wait though.

I'd love to see a article or something about that. I find that sorta hard to believe.

Most of the people I know that stopped washing their hair eventually ended up with dreads.

The OP is concerned about certain chemcials found in shampoo that can damage hair, so the other poster recommended a checmical free cleanser (free of certain chemcials).

Funny, most of the people I know that ended up with dreads stopped washing their hair.

I lie sorry - they were using soap and dragging it through their hair. Dunno how effective that would be though.

Please supply that evidense because that does cuts aginst the grain of common sense. If I don't wash my hair it gets dirtier and greasier. The hair doesn't start cleaning itself,i.e., self-cleaning.

Antidotal evidence suggests that it only gets dirtier. Take a look at the homeless folks, in Boston where I live they've been out there for months (years?) and as sad as that is, they're hair looks disgusting and grimy. I'm not belittling their plight but rather just using them as an example.

I wash my hair every 10 days or so. It took some time for the hair to get used though.

Same here. A litte bit of bar soap every other day does the trick. Maybe once every 7-10 days I use realy shampoo on my head. I've been using the same family-size bottle of shampoo for over a year now.

Hardly scientific evidence. Your head produces oils, which collect dirt and microscopic germs and debris. Not washing those off hardly allows the hair to go back to "a natural balance." A natural balance is what we had before the invention of shampoo and soap, when people often didn't bathe for weeks on end, and when they did, it was merely rinsing, not cleaning. The purpose of shampoo, like soap, is to lift the dirt from your hair and body.

So you don't use haircare products because you believe they will damage your hair? Don't you think they test these things to ensure they don't do the exact opposite of what they're supposed to do?

If shampoo damages your hair, you have to buy those hair-repair conditioners.

Keep in mind chemical free shampoo isnt that expensive.Im not talking about the stuff from the salon.I have found an excellent product range at my local health food store. the brand is at http://www.purist.com/
Check out the FAQ and some safety issues. I pay $20 for 500ml which lasts a while.I do have faith in these chemical free products because since first showing signs of alopecia and changing over to these products i have not seen any major hair loss and it doesnt smell artificial.

Ivory soap. 99 and 44/100% pure, no harsh chemicals. Cleans hair better than most fancy shampoos, too. One caution: it's drying to normal or dry hair. As my hair likes to make me look like I used Crisco as a hair dressing overnight, it works fine for me, though I don't use it often-usually it's what I use at the gym, saving me from carrying both soap and shampoo.

Any time you do not shampoo, you MUST brush (not just comb) your hair thoroughly to distribute the oils throughout the hair's length. Otherwise in short order YOU look like a Crisco-head. Brushing also helps stimulate the scalp, which keeps both the scalp and the hair healthier.

My doctor told me to use Dove soap for acne as it has less harsh than Ivory.

I also started using the dove shampoo a couple months ago, it is awesome. Best shampoo I have ever used.
