Hi guys,
I bought an Apple PowerBook a month ago from a friend of mine (not from Apple). At that time, he said that the PowerBook had 1 year warranty left. I haven't registered my name on the PowerBook yet so I thought the warranty would be still 1 year. But then when I was browsing the Apple sites a few weeks ago, I read that the warranty is actually based on the date of purchase. How can I possibly check its warranty left?
Thanks for your help guys.

The warranty starts the day the PowerBook leaves the factory (or arrives at your house... they're close enough not to worry). If your friend purchased AppleCare then either he or you have to register for the 2 year warranty extension (don't ask me why Apple does this).

You can check it at the iPod Support page, even when it is an iPod page you just need to introduce your PowerBook serial number and it'll let you know if the PowerBook is still under warranty.
To know your PowerBook serial number:
click on "About This Mac" menu item placed in the Apple menu, do several clicks over the Mac OS X number version shown in the 'About this Mac' window, you'll get it.
Then go to this web page:
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/
look for this (right margin)
enter your PowerBook's serial number… and good luck !

That is not correct. The warranty starts the day the original purchaser buys the machine, with a dated sales receipt. The day the unit leaves the factory has nothing to do with the warranty. If your friend didn't purchase AppleCare, and he's had the unit three months, you only have 9 months warranty, and no free tech support, left. If he purchased AppleCare, and registered it, then you have three years warranty, minus the time he's had the machine, left. If he purchased AppleCare and didn't register it within the first year, then the warranty is expired, and you're SOL.
