English spelling weirdness: curiosity vs curiousity.

I'm having a brain-lock. Why isn't curiosity spelled curiousity if it is just an extension of curious? There is curiousness and curiously, not curiosness or curiosly. Why is the "u" dropped from "curiosity"?
