How in the world could you use that controller as nunchucks?

Why does Nintendo feel the urge to do a mjor overhaul on its controller design everytime? I mean seriously, we know what you guys did with the SNES was revolutionary but you can't strike gold everytime and no one enjoys being confused for 30 min everytime they try your latest system.

The only really goofy one was the N64 controller. The Cube controller has some problems, but still works great for games built for it.

Please explain to me why you'd only put the z button on one side.
Its like having a PS2 controller with L2 R2 & R1.
And what was with the Asymmetrical A, B, X & Y buttons, and further, why were X & Y assigned to sit at uch weird angles?

Because they were moving it around till the last minute. Worst button ever.
Look at the N64 controller. It was split into 3 sections, the left hand section was never used (or held anyway) yet when someone went to pick up the controller it would be the first section they grasp. Poor usability.
At any rate the controller for the Xbox 360 is widely accepted as the best controller ever. I have to agree, it is incredible.

Oh my mistake. I didn't notice the 360 part.
In that case, undecided.

The original xbox wasn't perfect but I still like it better than the PS2's because of the trigger button. The 360's is bliss once you try it.

I did enjoy the triggers but I found the abxy buttons indistinguishable along the vast wasteland that was the xbox controller.

Funny thing is most games doesn't even use them anymore and stick to the triggers as they are pressure sensitive.

The Z button was fine for an extra button to bring up a map or something. The idea behind the main button layout was to give the user easy access to the two main buttons and have the extra stuff off to the side. It worked fine in some games and terribly in others. The Cube controller worked great for games built from the ground up for it but sucked for most ports. Especially fighting and FPS games.
Ultimately it was a bad design, since it wasn't flexible enough to be a good controller for every type of game.
The Xbox 360 controller is indeed my new favorite. If I had one nitpick it would be that it is too easy for newbs to hit the guide button. A lot of my pals aren't gamers and they would be bringing up the dashboard every minute or two. Oh, my other big complaint is that it is $50 bucks, which is pretty outrageous if you ask me. Still, it is solid, wireless and has a great button layout. It's great.

It was also designed for little Asian hands or little girls. The trigger buttons on the top are so close together I have to bend my fingers into an arch to hit them. For me it takes the cake for the worst controller ever.

Indeed the layout was poor, but it was slightly more comfortable than the N64 controller.
Fnny thing is, it'd bea pain to do what I did on the N64 controller in GoldenEye nowadays.

I have huge hands and I have never had a problem with the Cube controller. Weird. Anyway, I loved the N64 controller for some games and I loved the Cube controller for some games as well. The problem is when you have a game that doesn't work with the layout you are screwed. Ultimately it was a poor choice.
The worst controller of all time... hmmm.... I dunno. Probably either the original Xbox pad or the Dreamcast pad. Both were pretty bad.

There are 2 indisputable facts with Nintendo:
1) Each home console they sell they sell many times less than the previous system
2) They have had more bombs and made more mistakes than Sony, Xbox or ANY other game manufacturer.

I always thought the original Xbox controller was too big, but then again I have "little Asian hands". I haven't tried the Xbox 360 controller yet though.
I'm still completely confused as to how that Revolution controller is going to work though (having never held one in my hands).
I just wish somebody would sell an updated Robotron, with top notch solid Robotron dual joysticks or something like that. What is Robotron on the Xbox 360 like?
P.S. I know Nintendo is going for those l337 stylz from da hood, but that postcard makes me wonder if I can make money designing ads too.

"Revolutionary" Products that nobody touched:
GameCube Network adapter (One game used it)
GBA to GameCube link
N64's DD Drive (that zip drive thing that had ONE game)
The "Expansion port" on the bottom of the SNES that promised an upcoming CD-ROM drive (became playstation)
The Products that by Nintendo's OWN ADMISSION caused them to lose marketshare.
The N64 because they stuck to expensive cartridges and lost 3rd parties in droves.
The GameCube because the design of it was childish and it didn't play DVD's. (Nintendo insisted people didn't want DVD playback)
Sad thing is I own almost all of these. The DS is the first Nintendo product I thought was so stupid and didn't go anywhere near.
Because the Revolution has no HD support and putting all its cards in a controller that Xbox or Sony can copy I won't be getting it either.

The first Xbox controller was totally retarded huge even for my big white guy hands. They quickly replaced it with the S-controller for all markets and it was great. The 360 one is close to perfect.

Well neither Sony nor XBOX has been around nearly as long. if you compare them to SEGA, they're best contemporary, I think you'll find they had some competition in the bomb department.
Discounting pre-sony and portables you'll find the list shrinks a bit.

You're right about Sega, they didn't quite know how to handle the hardware either but their mistakes were more about always coming out with bigger and faster rather than really stupid products out the gate. They were smart enough to get out of hardware and into software.
The thing with Sony and Xbox is they don't try to reinvent the wheel with every new products update and know what people want. Nintendo is more about telling everyone that the current method is broken and they have the solution. I think it works out 20% of the time for them if you look at the products release success/failure rate.
Again, look at the sales charts for Nintendo systems every system that came out lost a ton of sales and marketshare starting with the SNES. Sony's goes up.
Nintendo has been doing well in the handheld market for so long because there haven't been any serious competitors till the PSP which it is making incredible inroads on a system with 20 years of a monopoly.

The problem with your argument is that Sony and Microsoft haven't been around long enough to make many mistakes. The PSP is the obvious Sony dud for what it was supposed to be.

Yes they have been around plenty. They both have next to no duds.
Sony 10 years. No real duds.
Xbox 5 years. Other than a big controller that they replaced no duds. Even beat Nintendo in the home game market on their first try by the most hated company in the world.
Look at the sales of the PSP (keeping in mind it came out months after the DS) and the sales of the UMD movies and keep a straight face calling it a dud.
Fastest selling game system EVER for Europe alone and it costs TWICE as much as a DS.
PSP was googles highest ranking search for 2005.

If I say you're right about this, will you stop repeating it in every game-related thread you're in?
Seriously, looking back through the thread, your comment was apropos of nothing. We were talking about controllers. I've not found one yet that my huge hands are really comfortable with, but none have been unbearable either. I probably liked the Dreamcast's the least, and he Cube's definitely took some getting used to.

The NGC controller is definitely my favourite. The buttons are instantly recognizable by sight and by touch, unlike the other controllers where it takes time to get used to the buttons on every new game.
And to Leia's Left Bun, Nintendo may have had more failures than the others but they have had more successes too. Nintendo is not afraid to try new things, unlike the "me-too" product that is the XBox. When you try so many new things like Nintendo does, you're bound to have failures.
But I don't see why you have to dredge it up every thread. If you don't like Nintendo, then fine. Why are you trying to convert the rest of us? Play whatever you like.

*ding ding* I had a friend warn me way back that the NGC's controller might take a bit of getting used to, but it instantly felt correct and I agree that the difference in the size and shape of the buttons helps. I don't even mind the Z button so much; I've never liked the four L and R buttons on the PlaytSation controller, and I detest their analogue sticks.
Having said all of that, it's great that all Nintendo threads degenerate so quickly to such silly squabbles....

heres another little factoid for you: Nintendo has had one down quarter in its HISTORY. They made 20+ % profit last year alone, while Sony's game division made 6 and MS made nothing. Anyone in business will tell you profit > mindshare any day of the week. Let Sony "rule" the market and make tremendously less profit, I dont care. I will continue to support Nintendo.

Quoted for emphasis. Really, make your point and move on. It's beyond tiresome, really. How about some discussion about the Revolution, for example.

That looks sweet! Joust is another one of my all time faves, but playing games like that with most game console controllers or PC joysticks usually sucks. The joysticks attached to a big solid base like in that pic are what I like to see.
Is that machine yours? Is it a full upright?
Can't say I liked Bubbles so much though.

Yeah bubbles is not my favorite either. I have a bit of a arcade game hobby. I don't have alot of room so I only have four. The pic I posted is my 1981 Williams Stargate upright that I converted into a Williams Multigame using Clay Cowgill's multi kit www.multigame.com and Artwork and control panel from www.Phoenixarcade.com It runs on the original williams hardware (joust hardware actually in mine). I still want to add a tint screen behind the bezel to black it out when its off. I think that will make it look sharp.
It plays at a touch of a button
Defender
Defender Stargate
Robotron 2084
Bubbles
Splat
Joust
Love the old Williams games
I also have a Namco Ms.PacMan/Galaga 20 year reunion Cocktail. and a couple of old jamma converted uprights I swap boards around on. I just sold a Pacman upright I had for $1000, made $400 on that
I'm more interested in beating my high scores on these then playing any modern games

Great to know. Does that make the games any more frequent, better or give them HD support?
Personally I rather have lots of great games over MS or sony making a buck.

The revolution due to the nature of its controls will compliment a second more traditional system like 360 or PS3. I think they will compete only with those that cant afford two systems. Those that can will want both as the nintendo vs. the others will be a very different beast.
I'm excited about the revolution. It just looks fresh to me. I have been playing with the same basic controls for around 25 years. I hope they really deliver.
One mistake though mentioned in the post above is last I heard Nintendo is not going to support HD.

try keeping them straight and "hug" the button with your fingers. works far better than arching your fingers.

SWF, we're well aware of your stance on Nintendo. We've been bombarded by it in every thread about Nintendo to an extreme extent. We get it. Now just let us bask in the gloriousness that we shall find in the Revolution, please quit raining on our parade. Please? How 'bout it?
That said, myself and everyone I associate myself with for that matter is already planning on purchasing this console. I look forward to it more than I do my next gasp of air.

Name the last time a game on a Sony or Microsoft system that directly led to over a billion dollars in sales?
Pokemon sales (overall) have passed $30,000,000,000. I do wonder how much Nintendo made off the licensing rights to those furry creatures?
Plus, I'd kill for a 64 controller with a padded joystick on today's systems. (PS2 and XBox both give me cramps, and I can't stand the placement of the Z button on the GameCube, I'll reserve judgement on the 360 til I play it for several hours strait)

That's absouletely not true. Consider the SNES, a popular console. Super Mario 64, a revoutionary game that convinced people of the practiciality of 3d. GBA, the de facto portable console forever and still a top-selling gaming machine. DS, #1 3rd gen portable. The SNES controller, or the N64 controller's analog stick. The D-Pad. Nintendo is like Apple: they popularized more ideas and software then consoles. In software, Mario, Zelda, Metroid and more are some of the best-known brands in gaming, with multiple studies confirming that to gamers and non-gamers alike, Mario is the #1 most recgonizable gaming icon.
