I used to use go live 4.0 which doesn't work in OS X, and am looking for a simple program along the lines of go live to update a site I take care of. Any suggestions, I can't afford much. Just need to do basic websites and ftp the files.

NVU, it's an open source Dreamweaver-like replacement that uses Mozilla/Firefox as its rendering engine.

I don't use it myself as I favor a simple text editor (my favorite being BBEdit), but it looks pretty good and the price is right!

He said that he isn't looking to pay much. Not to sound like a snob, but personally I wouldn't pay more than $10 for a WYSIWYG editor as long as they require manual tweaking to produce code that is to my satisfaction.

Well if you buy photoshop Golive is practically free.

Who in the world is stupid enough to buy them on their own. You can have everything together for under $1000.

Sounds perfect for somebody who says he can't afford much

Looking at Open Source solutions can be time consuming since it can be sort of like searching for a diamond in the rough, but there are diamonds to be had.

I've been thinking of starting up a website that would feature solid OSS for non-geeks who are looking for solid and proven solutions. Do you think something like this might be useful, or does such a thing already exist?

I have photoshop elements which is fine for web graphics, All I need is a basic easy to use wyiswyg editor I know very little html. I want to keep it under 100 preferably around 50

I actually liked SimpleText for Web design. It let you format text and still have a valid HTML file.

If you have access to a campus bookstore you can likely get Macromedia Studio 8 Education, which includes Dreamweaver 8, for $100. Btw, Golive 4 does run in OS X if you don't mind running Classic. Of course, I'm not going to lie and say that's a pleasant experience, but if you're desperate it works as a short-term solution.

what is the earlisest version of golive that works on os x? and if I purchase it used, will I have a problem with the serial #, I don't want to be pirating the software.

Any version will work if you use classic.

A Google search tells me Golive 6 was the first OS X-native version. There shouldn't be a problem with the serial number.

I think the perfect program for you is Rapidweaver. You can find a demo download at www.realmacsoftware.com. It is the easiest thing to use and has templates that you can use too. The program is $35 if you want to buy it and is well worth it. It has file downloads, podcasting, blogging, photo albums. Well, really anything you can imagine.

I haven't used it extensively, but I haven't had that problem yet...

Its code view mode looks pretty cool, haven't played with the WYSIWYG features yet, but I also appreciate the fact that it uses Firefox to render pages. I've also hated the silly rinky dink rendering engine built into Dreamweaver. It's probably gotten better in 8, but...

I haven't used the Softpress one much, but it seems like it's more suited to image based sites (graphics heavy) rather than text based. I tend to use text based sites, so went with GoLive *.

(* And more often than not, I'll end up using BBEdit or the OmniWeb editor anyways. Go figure.)

how does softexpress compare to golive 4.0? I've never used anything else outside of pagemill which is older than golive.

Pagemill was cool for just throwing the basics of the page together then editing it in text editor to fine tune it.

Back in the 90s when I did web design work, that is how I did it.
