i Hope not, iWeb is a retarded name. Safari is already quite popular so I don't want them to mess up the brand 3 years later.

the whole i-app thing is getting a bit lame anyway. as well as apple themselves, there are about a zillion apps out there from a similar number of developers, which have just copied "the apple way" and prefixed some boring word with an "i".

c'mon folks! - let's have some imagination!

on the subject of naming technology, has anyone noticed how different parts of the world tend to adopt different approaches:

in europe we like to think we're terribly cultured, so we'll name our fancy new bells'n'whistles satellite system "galilleo" or "copernicus" - just to let those young whippersnappers in the rest of the world realise we've been doing this inventing stuff for a l-o-o-n-g time!

in the US you love your acronyms - especially if you can make them spell out a real world, no matter how much linguistic contortion this involves. so you'd invent [for example] some amazing deep ocean trench exploring machine and call it "DIVER" - standing for "deeply immersible vehicle exploratory reconnaissance"

the chinese on the other hand, after many years of determinedly revolutionary sounding names ["long march" rockets etc] seem of late, to be naming things in a more genteel nature-inspired way these days. anyone like to buy a hand-held 10 megaton "pink lily" shoulder launched atomic bazooka or a "panda" brand submachine gun?

i reckon this could be pretty close to the truth. seeing as all the "i" apps tend to be squarely aimed at the user friendly, rather than professional end of the consumer market, i'd say iweb will be a an app which is tied into '.mac' and integrates online browsing, simple webpage creation, blogging, photo sharing and [if they can sort out the copyright angle] music sharing - all within a friendly unified apple interface.

Maybe its a new Apple app that lets you make your own porn sites.

No, wait. That would be iPorn, and flickr already has the soft core area covered.

I'l agree that it might be a WYSIWYG HTML editor. After all, Apple is all about the publish-from-your-desktop angle, so why wouldn't they have something that lets you create your own web pages without any HTML background knowledge?

And of course, I'm betting it's somehow tied to .mac.

I guess this means that someone has modified the non updated apple page. Apple would presumably update/correct the whole page if announcing something new. Still we will find out soon enough if it was a hoax or not

Between Pages and the WYSIWYG editor in Safari, they're already most of the way there. It would be interesting to see them take the last few steps.

Ouch that'd hurt.

Seriously though.. I always said they should have some sort of iHTML editor. It's kind of late if Apple is going to take that market. That said if they did decide to do that sort of thing they really should partner with someone like dare I say it MySpace or something like that, instead of just .Mac actually make a Mac cool for a teenager to own, or even partner with several online services so that it is really useful.

Um, Apple had a web page designer in either DP4 or the Public Beta (can't remember exactly which at the moment). It doesn't exactly take a rocket scientist to predict that they could bring that back at some point.

Frankly, I was surprised when 10.2 didn't have it.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

The screenshot of Sandvox looks similar to RapidWeaver - http://www.realmacsoftware.com/rapidweaver/index.php - that I just bought.
I hope this iWeb (if it is a web editor) isn't limited to use with .Mac
iMac, Intel Core-Duo 2GHz, 2GB, 250GB, OS X 10.4
PowerBook 12", 867MHz, 640MB, 60GB, OS X 10.4
iMac G3, 333MHz, 288MB, 6GB, OS X 10.3
iPods: 3G iPod, 1G mini, 1G shuffle, 2G nano

Nah, not at all. I find the iPhoto and .Mac combination alone really only useful for one thing, which is to make web galleries. That's far too basic, even for a non-designer like me.

This is what I wrote in my iWeb thread in the Applications forum:

"I fit into the iWeb market.

.Mac and iPhoto, etc. are horribly limiting in terms of web page creation, but I don't want to have to run Dreamweaver either. iWeb will be a winner if it's anything like what RapidWeaver seems to be.

I just hope it's not as slow as Pages was when it came out.

Yeah, it'll be Web 2.0 for the (dot) mac.

Share your thoughts (blog), your photos (aka flickr rip off), your garageband creations (aka myspace rip off) and all that jazz.

Maybe it's a better web. Web 2.0 came out just a few weeks ago, so it's more or less time for web 3.0 aka iWeb.

RapidWeaver kicks both their asses. Though if you are dumb enough to pay more for an .Mac account, then iWeb should be a nice addition to iLife. (I just wish that Frontrow came with it, but the hacked version should work fine for now.)

From the looks of the iWeb icon, it appears to be Matas's first icon work there at Apple (aside from Widget work maybe?). Good for him.

The Steve iWeb demo was pretty impressive. Looks pretty neat and intuitive.

I pay for .Mac and I'm not dumb. I've been thinking about buying RapidWeaver, but I think I'll try out iWeb first.
