Scary. They cat's name was "Cody".

I think the last few sentences of this paragraph sum it up.
The Daryabeygis (dog owners), for their part, said they are saddened that it has come to this. After Cody's death, they gave a typed condolence letter to the Christians. Christian (cat owner) wrote them a letter, too, recounting that Cody sometimes tried to brighten her mood by offering her a dead mouse. To the Daryabeygis, that anecdote simply reinforced their view of the natural world: Cats kill mice. Dogs kill cats.

I'm a bird. I am the 1% (of pets).

It's not 'natural' for dogs to kill cats. Dogs that kills or attacks smaller animals without provocation are rare. Most dogs will go to investigate but generally leave it at that.

I hope the dog is euthanized.

I hope the dog is awarded with a medal. Or at least a doggy cookie.

Is this true for all canine or just domesticated ones?

Okay, so they are BOTH at fault. BOTH of them let their animals roam free:

Christian and her husband, Eric, moved from Herndon to their five-acre farm a year ago, in part so their animals could roam free.
Why cat owners think it's okay for their cats to roam free is beyond me. IT'S NOT.

If you can't keep your animals UNDER YOUR CONTROL - at ALL times - don't have them!

Seriously, I'm so sick of cat owners that just let their cats roam around free with the excuse, "Cats are supposed to roam around."

Give. Me. A. Break. THEY'RE NOT.

Neither cats nor dogs should roam around free. Case in point: If the lady whose cat was killed hadn't "forgotten" to put her cat back in her house her cat would still probably be alive. Should the dog have killed the cat? No.

BOTH PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE HAD THEIR PETS CONFINED OR UNDER THEIR CONTROL. Period. Then this wouldn't have happened.

They're both stupid.

Yes, that is part of being a good pet owner. One must take care of the pet. I feel sorry for "Cody" the cat.

You can take the cat out of the bungle but you can't take the jungle out of the dog.

err wait I think that makes very little sense.

Yes. If anyone knew of my, shall we say, disinterest in cats, they'd know better than to name the cat "Cody."

My dog probably would have chased that cat up a tree and tried to pull it down also. She wouldn't have tried to kill it, though.

I know that your dog is friendly, just wants to play. Mine are the same way.
