John Scofield, along with Bill Frisell and Pat Metheny are often called the "big 3" contemporary jazz guitar players recording and performing today. Scofield is one of the few jazz musicians that have record deals with a major record label (his under Verve) - the big labels make most of their money selling Jazz records recorded by jazz artists no longer living.

Jazz musicians and other accomplished musicians often get excited by what musicians of this calibre are doing, because they constantly raise the bar by playing their asses off, and putting together absolutely awesome bands. I'm willing to bet that this performance will be appreciated by you guys:

http://www.netmusician.org/~joe/scomayerleno.mp4

This is a video clip of Scofield appearing on the Tonight Show with guest artist John Mayer. This song, I Don't Need No Doctor, was recorded on his latest CD: That's What I Say: John Scofield plays the music of Ray Charles. This CD features guest appearances from Mayer, Aaron Neville, Dr. John, and others. It is a very big deal, and sounds absolutely killer.

Scofield has Ray Charles's bass player on the album, and an absolutely rocking band. It looks like the band on the Tonight Show is some sort of pickup band, perhaps put together by Verve to work around some loopholes in contracts or something, as these guys are different than the band Scofield recorded with... they still sound good though.

Jazz often gets (fairly) criticized as not invoking a visceral reaction to those with an untrained ear. I think that you'll enjoy this clip even if you've never heard a lick of jazz before. Even though Scofield's backgrounds are very much jazz, recording and performing with Miles Davis on albums such as Bitches Brew, this music is a nice mix of jazz and R&B, and some of the tracks have Scofield's industrial electric funky jam-band type sound. If you like what you hear here, you should definitely check out his album!

I've listened to his album 23432423415 times, this band really excites me! Let me know what you think! It took me all bloody afternoon converting this stupid video clip out of WMV 9 into something that will play on the Mac...

I find the ending of this clip kind of funny - Scofield just sort of lets himself disappear into the background behind Paris Hilton and some other bimbo. This is probably the closest he's ever come to interacting with big mainstream media, he sort of looks like he doesn't know what to do

Chick Corea's music is rather intellectual, but damn that guy can play! I like the stuff he did in the 70's... it sounds like hippy music, but it's very slick.

Can you post some links to some info on this Frank Gamble guy? I suspect that either his name is very common, there is another famous Frank Gamble, or you spelled his name wrong, as I can't get anything to come up in Google.

Pretty nice site.
I know a bit about John. Been listening to this stuff since the 80s.

Not that I claim to be an expert at him or jazz, but it's not new to me.

NN should form a jazz band, someone lay down the parts and pass it around, and add to it.

Thanks for the Gambale correction...

I would bet you know John, since you seem to be on a first name basis with him

So am I, hence the smiley faces. That's what they are for, right? To indicate friendliness?

But anyhow....

I think a MacNN musical contribution thing would be cool.

I did it before..

I need to get a better recording interface though.

What do you think? Good idea?

Anyone here play the drums?

Can I produce?

I'll start that job already...

Right, you're all crap so we should get some session blokes in. And you're all ugly so we should get those Milli Vanilli blokes in to prance around a bit. And can someone get me a cup of coffee, a bottle of Jack and a muffin? Make that two muffins. And some dancing girls. That'll be $10,400 thanks.
