This is crazy. How can the cell phone providers be so careless?

How do these companies get the records? Usually by simply calling a service repreentative at the cellular company and pretending to be you and then asking for a copy of your bill. Some companies are believed to have hacked into Internet records and actually logged onto custimer accounts. Then others have turncoat insiders at the cell companies who access and turn over the data for a fee.

But wireless companies aren’t as clean in this deal as you’d think. Many of them sell mobile phone records to marketers...

I've only had one marketing call on my cell, but I think it was some sweepstakes provided by my wireless provider.

AMERICAblog just bought General Wesley Clark's cell phone records for $89.95
I reported the other day that your cell phone records are on sale online for anyone to buy, without your permission. Well, this morning AMERICAblog bought former presidential candidate, and former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO (SACEUR), General Wesley Clark's cell phone records for one hundred calls made over three days in November 2005, no questions asked.

Ridiculous... who was the provider? If it's Verizon, I would consider canceling my subscription.

I'm guessing in another 6 months, the phone companies will officer a "service" of not giving out your information for $4.95 a month (plus two free ringtones).

Just like phone companies charge NOT to list your phone number in the phone book.
