I adopted my first dog. He has Australian shepherd in him and probably golden retriever. I was out of town on a dog run (since I volunteer for dog rescue sometimes we transport dogs aka a "dog run") way up in the middle of nowhere yesterday and came across this little guy and his brothers and I adopted him on the spot. I do a lot of dog rescue for the purebred dogs (their organizations contact us and we assist in placing them) but have never kept one of the dogs from rescue even though I've been doing rescue for many years. This is a first for me in many years. I haven't adopted a dog since I was a child, though I've been fostering dogs for a long time. I just never thought to keep one and a lot of the dogs that I've fostered are already spoken for and I'm just a temporary stop on the way to their new home.

Anyway, I feel really great about adopting and he has the nicest personality. It feels really good to give a dog a home that really needs it and I'm in love with him. He's just awesome. I'm in love with him - he's just wonderful.

If you've adopted a dog post his or her picture here also.

I do. I always have a dog Godfather. But they're already going to homes when they come here...I'm just the temporary home while they a) Become socialized or b) Learn manners and/or obedience or c) We find a home for them. I'm a foster home for rescued dogs. I've never kept any of them, though.

Now, anyone have any ideas for names?

(And does anyone want one of his brothers or sisters? If you want one I'll go get it and ship it to you if you'll pay the airline shipping fee. They're all cute like he is.)

That's one hell of a cute dog. If we had the time to care for a dog I'd wire you a ticket tonight. Unfortunately we both work pretty long hours and live in close to downtown. Not ideal for a dog, unfortunately.

Mastrap:

Big XOXOXOXO to you - the thought is what counts.

I'm glad that you're smart to realize that they need attention...if everyone was responsible like you then the world would be full of happy dogs and many less would be in dog shelters.

to you, Mastrap.

Also, forgot to say that no, he doesn't have a tail - like other Aussies that also have no tails. Someone asked me today "why his tail was so short," LOL!

He'll probably be about 45 pounds. Mom is/was about 40 pounds and dad was about 50 pounds. Both are on the smaller side.

He looks like a Sparky to me. Or Damien, because of those eyes.

You got yourself a dream dog, Cody. You do know about Australian Shepherds, don't you? That they NEED, NEED NEED a job or they find something "interesting" to do. You usually don't like what they find interesting, either...

Gorgeous dog. You've got a keeper there!

Thank you, ghporter!

Yes, I know about him finding something to do --- >

I remember a border collie we fostered once. I left him alone in my bedroom while I took a shower and came out to find that he'd chewed up the corner of my new mattress.

He eventually went to live with a veterinarian so he got a great home.

I just got in from my 5:30 AM potty trip.

Railroader: I love your dog.

There's a book called Ella in Europe and it's all about a guy that takes his dog - that is a labrador and greyhound mix just like your puppy - to Europe and how, in Europe, he can take his dog anywhere compared to here in the states. It's an amusing book. Anyway, his dog is so smart, like yours.

Europeans have a differerent sensibility about dogs than Americans do. Of course you can go to jail for not taking proper care of your dog in some European countries (and the definition of "proper care" is not necessarily what you and I would expect or even like), so there are some seriously high expectations going on there.

One thing the so-called "animal rights" people have been pushing for is a legal change from "ownership" to "guardianship" of pets, particularly companion pets like dogs. Why? They want to be able to take a dog away from a person who is not treating the dog "properly." Unfortunately, this sterling sounding idea means that someone else, with absolutely no contact with the dog, who does not know the dog's temperament, likes and dislikes, or level of training, can arbitrarily say "you aren't taking proper care of this dog." That kind of goes against everything private ownership of property is about.

Further, these are some of the same people forwarding breed-specific dog bans. It is NOT the dog breed that is responsible for bad dog behavior, it is how the PEOPLE WHO OWN THE DOG TRAIN (or don't train) THE DOG. American Staffordshire Terriers are some of the most lovable and loyal dogs ever. They are, unfortunately, misrecognized as "pit bulls," (which are actually not a breed at all) and thus they are thought to be vicious. In the '70s Dobies were supposed to be the vicious breed-they're just smart and can be taught to be aggressive. Rottweillers are supposed to be vicious-wrong again. What about German Shepherds? Again, wrong. These dogs can be TRAINED to be aggressive, but they are not by nature aggressive.

I have had significant contact with the Air Force unit that trains ALL DoD working dogs. It takes a whole lot of work to produce a working dog that is both well-controlled and aggressive on command. It is much easier for stupid people to just mistreat a dog enough to get him to be poorly controlled and aggressive, which is both dangerous and abusive. THIS is what the "dog attack" issue is about.

Ok, I'm off my soapbox now. No need to get the spoiled tomatoes...

Yes, iChat is about it for me. No talking - my mouth hurts like heck.

The dog is very, very cute and great. I'm going to take him to the veterinarian later today, if I'm able to (as in, "if the painkillers work") for a check-up.

ghporter: I think we all agree with you about the dog thing. Cocker spaniels are thought to be cute and sweet...when in fact they are the only breed prone to something called "rage syndrome" and are often mean little devils. But, because they have big brown eyes no one would ever consider them aggressive.

Honestly, after dealing with that Basenji I transported and kept overnight, I read up about them and it turns out that they frequently can be ill-tempered and intolerant because they are not as domesticated as our average dogs. One thing is for sure: He scared me. He was MEAN.

The dog on the left belonged to a lady that my wife works with. She had a baby and didn't need the dog anymore so we snatched him up. About 6 months later the one on the right came walking up the street to me when I was outside washing my car. She was emaciated - ribs and hips poking out. Her back was cut and bloody and she had worms. I took her in and fixed her up. I even sold my modded xbox so we could get her spayed.
She and Bailey are the best of friends now and I don't think an animal could love me any more than she does. She never leaves my side.
Kudos to you Cody. You won't regret taking him in.

That is awesome that you rescued both dogs. Kewl.
It pains me to believe that people can be cruel to animals. If you can do it to an animal, you can do it to a human. Yes I watch the news and it's very sad. But when I read stories like this thread, it gives me hope.
ya'll done good

Sorry, MrsLarry + Dogs = don't get along. But I've got two awesome cats.

Bowser, (with the spots) is a Bengal cat. A cross-breed between a domestic house cat, and and asian leopard. We had to get him from a breeder. Kismet is torti-calico and she's a rescue from a shelter near where I work. This is them cuddling.

What about that "face transplant lady"?? Originally, I read that her face was "mangled by her dog" THEN, I read that she had tried to kill herself, and was unconscious in her home when her dog began to eat her face. EAT HER FACE!!! My cats would never eat my face. They could have a couple of toes or something if they were really hungry.

Hi Everyone & WDLove:

MrsLarry...I agree about that. That's something that did occur to me. I don't understand that entire issue with her "dog eating her face." Makes NO sense.

The only thing I can figure is that the dog was trying to rouse her from unconsciousness and did that kind of damage. That's the ONLY thing I can think of.

I dunno - maybe

But hey, maybe I watch too many medical dramas, but isn't a person with suicidal tendencies NOT put on the list for a transplant? Or does that only apply to organs? We gotta doctor in the house??

Bingo!

That's what they speculated happened. That's what I read. To bad they killed it.
