Luckily that one is rather harmless. Man of wars will kill ya.

I got stung by a TINY jellyfish in Australia and it hurt like hell.

Hi Cody,

Yes, that is amazing. Still a beatiful: animal.

Hope this finds you much better today.

"Seaside communities in Japan have tried to capitalize on the menace by developing novel jellyfish dishes from tofu to ice cream, but for some reason the recipes have failed to take off."

If they don't even eat it in Japan it must be incredibly nasty.

I've eaten jellyfish before. Boiled and thinly sliced with sesame oil and soy sauce, it's actually pretty good. Crunchy texture. However, these are comparatively small jellyfish apparently. Giant jellyfish might taste worse, but then again, maybe not:

South Korean fishermen have been suffering similar woes, but China, where giant jellyfish are a delicacy often served dried and dressed with sesame oil, does not seem to have registered the outbreak as a major problem, Japanese officials said.

The ice cream idea doesn't sound so great though...

While I can't say for certain, the focus on the diver looks much fuzzier than the focus on the jelly- as if perhaps the jelly was much closer than the diver. Pretty simple trick to make a 6 in jelly look the size of a man.

Of course I didn't read the article, but I don't think it's big as it looks.

I saw a program about jellies on Discovery. One of the most potent venoms in the world comes from a jellyfish about the size of a tic-tac. During filming one of the researchers touched a glove that had come in contact with one of these tiny jellies and spent about six weeks in the hospital...most of that time in excrutiating pain.

Freaky.

Yes, the program sounds very intersting.

KeyLimePi:

What kind of jellyfish IS that?

I always thought they should name a Jellyfish after Smuckers Grape Jelly.

Do you mean Portugese Man Of War? Cuz those aren't lethal to humans. The sting will hurt though.

Did not know this... but evidently: "The notorious Portuguese man o'war is not a jellyfish at all but a collection of different organisms including stinging tentacles"

From here

Still, that pic does look like it is being affected by the camara angle... the diver does seem to be a bit in the background (there is still no doubt that these things are huge.. but maybe not as big as depicted?).

No, if you are allergic to them you can easily die. I am that way with wasp stings.

I look at them and feel like barfing.

Blegh.

(Actually, come to think of it, I don't even have to look at them and I still feel like barfing...I don't feel good today.)

Yeah, but then by that reasoning you could say peanuts are lethal too. I know people who could die from simply touching peanuts on their lips.

ie. It's not the venom per se in the bee sting that kills you, it's the hypersensitivity reaction. For everyone else, the bee sting is just a painful annoyance.

P.S. I think the way jellyfish ooze about in the water is very cool. Sorta like living lava lamps.

You're right but people still have to be aware of it. If you are allergic to peanuts you have to be VERY careful.

Jellyfish is a VENOM, you have to know how that will effect some people. Some will just hurt like hell, some may die before they reach a hospital.

Same goes for Tarantulas. The bite isn't worse than a bee sting but since I am allergic to bees I had to be very cautious when I was in the Dominican not to run into a Tarantula.
